What is Crypter-2016?

Crypter-2016 is a screen locker that tries to convince you it has encrypted your files. It seems to target Portuguese-speakers as the ransom note is in Portuguese. The email that contains the virus seems to also be in Portuguese. Fortunately, even though it wants to convince you otherwise, it does not actually encrypt your files. However, it will rename your files and lock your computer screen. This might scare many users and convince them that they do not have access to their files anymore. The developers will demand that you pay a certain amount of money in Bitcoins if you want to restore the files. Obviously, you do not need to pay anything. Just remove Crypter-2016 from your computer and you can access your files as usual. We hope that this will become a good lesson and you will be more careful in the future.

What does Crypter-2016 do?

The reason you have Crypter-2016 is because you opened a malicious email attachment. Ransomware developers are capable of sending thousands of infected emails and all you have to do is open the file attached to it. Then, the virus downloads onto your computer. Be very careful when opening emails with attachments from unknown senders. Even if they claim to be from a company or the government. Always double check the contents and the sender before you open file attachments. This time you got lucky, but next time you might download actual ransomware. And then, file loss is highly likely.

Once Crypter-2016 gets onto your computer, it will lock your screen and display a ransom note in Portuguese. The note will claim that your computer is blocked and that you must pay a ransom to get your files back. In reality, your files are only renamed and the .crypter file extension is added to them. Whatever Crypter-2016 developers claim is most likely not true. You can access your files as usual but you also need to delete Crypter-2016. In any case, even if Crypter-2016 did encrypt your files, we would not recommend paying. Ransomware developers have this habit of ignoring victims once they pay. So the victim not only losses files but also money. We hope you never get into this kind of situation, and to make sure that you don’t, invest in backup. This can save you a lot of money and nerves because even if your computer got infected with ransomware, you would have a way to get your files back. Anyway, once you delete Crypter-2016, you can use your computer as usual.
