About this threat

CryptoGod is file-encrypting type of malware. These kinds of threats are very difficult to deal with as they encrypt your files and then ask you to pay to decrypt them. What’s worse is that getting infected is very easy. All you need to do is open the wrong email attachment or fall for a fake download and the ransomware is on your computer, encrypting files while you try to figure out what’s going on. When the encryption process is complete, you will be asked to pay a ransom and the criminals would supposedly give you a decrypter.

CryptoGod

We suggest you do not count on that. Ransomware developers are criminals, they do not care whether you will get your files back. They will most likely just take your money and not give you anything in return. This is why specialists are always warning users to have backup for all important files. If you had it, you could just delete CryptoGod and recover your files from there. In any case, you should ignore the demands, and remove CryptoGod.

How does it affect my computer?

These kinds of infections spread via email attachments, fake downloads and updates. In the case of the email, the crooks attach an infected file to an email and send it many users. When you open the attachment, the ransomware enters your computer. Those spam emails are usually blocked by most mail providers but there is always some possibility that it could end up in your inbox. They are usually very obvious and if you know what to look for, you’ll be able to differentiate between legitimate and malicious emails. Never open email attachments before you make sure they are safe. Fake downloads and updates can also lead to an infection. Which is why you should never download anything from questionable sources, like pop-ups. If you are in need of something, use legitimate/official sites.

It does seem to have a few bugs but the ransomware does what’s it’s designed to do, which is encrypt files. All your files will be encrypted very quickly and they will all have .payforunlock attached to them. A message will then appear, explaining that your files have been encrypted and how to get them back. Of course, you are asked to pay. The initial amount is 0.03 Bitcoin ($78 or €70) but it will increase to 0.05 ($130 or €117) if victim to do not pay in the given time. Paying the crooks is the last thing you should do. There are no guarantees that your files will be decrypted after you pay so we suggest you don’t. Even if it’s a relatively small amount, you’d still be supporting cyber criminals. Ignore the demands and delete CryptoGod. If you had backup, restore your files only after you remove CryptoGod.
