About this program

Mac Mechanic virus refers to a system optimisation tool that is also classified as a potentially unwanted program (PUP). As can be seen from the name of the program, it targets Mac users. Just like many other Mac optimisation tools, such as Mac Auto Fixer, it promises to clean the computer from junk, remove rogue programs, etc. The reason this program is classified as potentially unwanted is because it uses questionable tactics to both install on users’ computers and make users buy the full version of the program. If you do not recall installing the program and it suddenly appeared on your computer, it probably used the bundling method to install unnoticed. It was likely attached to some free program you installed, and you did not notice. When the added programs go unnoticed, they are allowed to install alongside. If you continue reading, we will explain how you can avoid installing junk programs that come bundled.

It’s not a malicious programs so there is no need to worry about it doing any kind of harm. However, if you are not going to purchase the program, it may be a good idea to just delete Mac Mechanic virus.. And purchasing it may not be the best idea. Scan results that the program will show you may contain issues that are very minor but made to seem serious, or issues that do not exist in the first place. A lot of dubious system optimisers falsely inform users about various problems in order to make them buy the full program, which is necessary in order to use the fixing function.

In addition, system optimisers are not the best programs to use to clean a computer as they can accidentally delete some important files, which could result in your system crashing and needing to be reinstalled.

How did it install?

You can find the program on some download websites, as well as on its official site but you most likely picked it up via bundling method. You probably recently installed some kind of freeware that had it attached as an extra offer. Those offers are preselected to install alongside the program automatically, unless you deselect it. During freeware installation, it’s a good idea to pay attention. You should be given the option of choosing Advanced (Custom) settings during installation, and those settings will allow you to not only view added offers but also deselect them. We would recommend deselecting all offers whenever you are installing programs because otherwise, you would be allowing junk to install.

And if you installed the program knowingly, research programs before installing in the future. A simple search with Google would have given you results indicating that the program may not be what it seems. It’s important to research programs carefully, read reviews, check the reputation, etc. because otherwise, you might end up installing something you will very much regret later.

Is it a dangerous program?

Mac Mechanic is advertised as a system optimisation tool so it’s not going to harm your computer. However, whether it will help it is a different story. Such programs try to attract users by claiming to be able to speed up performance, get rid of junk files and just generally improve the device’s health. They usually allow users to scan for free but then request that they buy the program in order to use it to its full capabilities. Asking users to first buy the program before using it is not a bad practise, but because these kinds of programs falsely inform users about issues, buying them is not a good idea.

When the program suddenly appears on your screen and shows that it has detected tens or even hundreds of issues, users will become unsettled. Less tech-savvy users who believe their computer is in desperate need of fixing would then try to use the fix feature, only to be met with a pop-up asking to purchase the full version.

Before making that purchase, you should check what exactly is detected on your computer. In a lot of cases, old registry entries, which have very little impact on the system’s performance, are detected as serious issues. Or as we’ve mentioned before, some of those issues might not exist at all. Another reason you should check the results is to see that the program is not intending to delete some kind of crucial system file. It would not be the first time such a program has done damage to a system by erasing necessary files.

Whether you keep the program is up to you, but purchasing it is not recommended. And if you’re not gonna buy it, there’s not much use in keeping it. Thus, it may be better to just remove Mac Mechanic virus.
