About codecfix

codecfix is a malicious executable that users pick up when downloading torrent files from popular torrent sites, like the Pirate Bay. We discourage the usage of torrents altogether as not only are you probably stealing content by downloading torrents, but you are also possibly endangering your computer. codecfix

Torrents have been used to spread malware for many years now, and have infected users with ransomware, keyloggers, Trojans etc. This particular malware seems to come together with torrents for popular films/TV series. Once it’s downloaded onto a computer and you try to run the .wmv file, a notification appears, asking to install a codecfix.exe file. If you agree, malware infects the computer. Generally, anti-malware should prevent this from happening by stopping the installation, but if you don’t have anti-malware installed, the malware will have no trouble installing.

The malware does not try to disguise itself, and you will notice immediately that something is wrong. Weird programs will install, you’ll get weird pop-ups and be redirected to certain websites when browsing the Internet, you’ll be unable to install other programs, and your computer will act sluggishly. codecfix can be a particularly annoying malware to get rid of, and it’s impossible for non-expert computers users to delete codecfix without the help of anti-malware software. So you will have to obtain a security tool. You might not be able to install it since the malware could be preventing it, but if you scroll down to the last section of this report, we will explain how you can bypass this.

How did the malware install?

As we’ve said above, you got codecfix by downloading a torrent file. Malware spreading via torrents is not at all surprising, and users have always been warned to be very cautious if they choose to use them. You may have already realized this, but there were certain signs hinting at the torrent you downloaded being malicious. First of all, it had an unusually high amount of seeders, even for a popular film/TV series. According users on reddit, infected torrents have more than 5000 or 10000 seeders. Obviously, this many seeders would temp many less cautious users to download the torrent, while it would cause suspicion for more tech-savvy people. Another sign is the size of the file. If you’re trying to download the latest Game of Thrones episode and it’s 500mb, that’s suspicious. Essentially, if it seems to be too good to be true, it probably is. Also, malicious torrents are usually uploaded by new users, so that’s another sign.

While we discourage using torrents, if you choose to use them, at least be careful to not end up with malware.

What does codecfix do?

We should note that if you downloaded the malicious torrent but did not agree to install codecfix.exe, your computer is okay. However, if you pressed okay when you clicked on the torrent and the codecfix.exe prompt appeared, your computer is unfortunately infected. That’s pointing out the obvious because you’ve probably already noticed that something is wrong. If you had reliable anti-virus running, it would have prevented this infection.

The malware will make various changes to your system, and modify the Windows Registry. It will cause weird programs to install, such as browser hijacker SafeFinder. If you try to remove them, you’ll either be unsuccessful or other programs will install in their place. You’ll be redirected to weird sites while browsing, and your screen will be bombarded with ads. If you check your Task Manager, you’ll see weird processes using up a lot of your CPU, and your computer will act sluggish, while programs will crash constantly. Essentially, your computer will become barely usable.

Furthermore, if for some reason you have anti-malware installed but it did not stop the infection, it will become disabled. And you’ll be unable to install new programs, as they too will be disabled.

This is a very serious infection because who knows what kinds of programs it will install onto your device. So the sooner you remove codecfix from your system, the better.

If you are reading this, we are assuming you are not a computer expert. If that is the case, you will need to uninstall codecfix automatically. However, since anti-malware would be disabled, you’d need to operate it in Safe Mode. Boot your computer in Safe Mode, run a powerful anti-malware software (note that you should use the best there is, as not every tool will detect it) and have it remove codecfix.

Here’s a few anti-virus programs that will detect codecfix:

  • Avast and AVG – FileRepMetagen [Malware]
  • ESET – Win32/Indiloadz.F
  • Malwarebytes – Trojan.Dropper
  • McAfee – Artemis!05E23A9AFF48
  • Sophos – Mal/Generic-S
