Tech-support scams come in the form of persistent ads, and in this case your browser will essentially be locked. A windows will pop up, claiming that your computer is downloading a virus, thus has been blocked. In order to prevent damage and loss of data, you are asked to call the displayed number. The number is supposedly for Microsoft tech-support, but in reality it’s for professional scammers.

There could be two reasons why you are seeing that scam pop-up. You were either visiting a website that has questionable ads, or you have adware. If it’s the former, once you close the window, you should be fine. If you have adware, you will need to delete it from your computer in order to remove Downloading Virus… Trojan_horse.exe POP-UP Scam.

What is causing the pop-ups?

If you were visiting a questionable website when the pop-up appeared, the site is probably to blame. Once you close the window, it shouldn’t reappear as long as you stay away from such websites. If you regularly visit them, install an adblocker to block such ads. If you notice that the pop-up keeps appearing randomly, you may be dealing with adware. Adware is a relatively minor infection that users usually pick up when installing free programs. Adware, among other infections like browser hijackers, can be attached to free programs as extra offers, which need to be deselected during installation. If they go unnoticed, they will install alongside without requiring explicit permission.

Next time you’re installing freeware, make sure you opt for Advanced (Custom) settings. Those settings, unlike Default, will make all added offers visible. If there is something attached to the program, all you need to do is uncheck the box(es). After you have deselected all offers, you can continue installing the program.

Is your computer actually infected with some kind of virus?

This scam is a more elaborate attempt compared to other scams. It opens multiple windows to make it more convincing. You will see an alert claiming that Windows is trying to stop a virus from downloading, there will also be a window with various commands to make the virus attack seem legitimate. On top of it all, there will be a message claiming that your computer has been blocked. The notification warns you to not close the window or restart your computer. There will be a list of reasons why your computer has been blocked, and a phone number provided. Supposedly, the number would connect you to Microsoft tech-support, but in reality, scammers would be on the other end of the line. They would proceed to tell you about the supposed seriousness of the problem and offer to fix everything. You would be asked to give remote access to your computer, and scammers would proceed to pretend to fix your device while stealing your personal files. In the end of it all, you would be asked to pay a couple of hundred dollars for their “services”.

These kinds of virus alerts will never be legitimate, so you can disregard all of them as scams. Microsoft will never make unsolicited contact with you, nor will it ask you to call them via weird pop-ups. Furthermore, you should only trust your anti-malware software with malware notifications. All virus alerts that appear in your browser will be scams.
