About DriverUpdate virus

DriverUpdate virus refers to a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that is advertised as a tool that will supposedly install necessary updates. It’s one of those programs that will claim your computer needs fixing, and then offer its services for a price. Generally, such programs will claim that the computer has various unnecessary files which are slowing down the computer, but this one claims to detect out-of-date drivers. DriverUpdate virus

While its functionality is a bit different from most PUPs of this kind, DriverUpdate still belongs to the same group. Such programs are often referred to as scareware because they scare users into thinking that their computers have serious issues and then ask them to pay to fix them. More specifically, they ask that users buy the full versions. However, the problem with this is that the issues that are detected are not always as serious as they are made out to be, or even real. Some programs simply show worrying results in order to make users pay money.

Besides using scare tactics in order to make users buy the full program, there is another reason why such programs are classified as potentially unwanted. Their distribution methods. PUPs are often spread using software bundling, which is a method that allows programs to install unnoticed to the user. Essentially, what happens is PUPs are added to popular freeware as extra offer. Those offers are permitted to install alongside the programs without needing the permission of the user. If the user wants to not install those offers, he/she needs to manually prevent them from doing so. We will explain how to do in the following section.

We do not think DriverUpdate is a reliable program to have, nor do we think that it will actually function the way it promises. If you did not install it knowingly, we strongly suggest that you remove DriverUpdate virus.

PUPs install via software bundling

Software bundling is a popular distribution method among unwanted program developers. It allows the programs to install without users actively consenting to it. Popular free programs, no matter where they are downloaded from, will commonly come with added offers. Most users won’t even notice those offers because they will be hidden during installation. In order to view whether something has been added, and deselect if there has, you need to pay attention to how you install programs. In particular, you need to opt for Advanced or Custom settings. Those settings, unlike Default, will make all offers visible and allow you to deselect all. All you really need to is uncheck the boxes of those offers. After you have done that, you can continue installing the program.

What does DriverUpdate virus do?

Once the program is installed, whether it happened with your approval or not, it will scan your computer for driver related issues. It supposedly scans for errors and out-of-date drivers, and then promises to fix the issues. We don’t recommend trusting the scan results are they may be exaggerated or made up all together, used as means to influence you to buy the full program. If you took a closer look at the scan results, you would see that the found issues are not as serious as they are made out to be. If you try to use the program to fix the driver issues, you would be asked to buy the full version.

It should also be mentioned that driver updates are free so purchasing a program for that does not really make much sense. If you don’t purchase the program but do not uninstall DriverUpdate virus, you will constantly be pestered by the program. The alerts will regularly pop-up in your notification corner. Furthermore, you might also notice more ads than usual while browsing. The ads will appear on all popular browsers you have installed, whether it’s Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Engaging with them is not suggested because you could be exposed to unreliable content, including malware and scams.

These kinds of programs often turn out to be scams so it’s necessary to be careful when looking for one to use. Usually, simple research with Google will let you know whether the program is legitimate or a scam. So always do you research before installing something, or purchasing a program.
