About Mac Cleanup Pro

Mac Cleanup Pro is a fraudulent program, advertised as a system optimization tool. It’s not exactly malicious, although you will see it being referred to as a virus by many users. It installs without permission and starts constantly pestering the user about supposed issues on a computer. A more accurate classification for this kind of program is a potentially unwanted program (PUP). There are a lot of similar ones out there (MacOptimizer, Mac Mechanic), and they aim to make money by convincing users to buy full versions of supposed system optimization programs. Those kinds of programs scare users into believing that their computers have tens and often even hundreds of issues, just so they would buy the full version, as it’s necessary to fix the supposed issues.

Mac Cleanup Pro

This particular program affects Mac users, although Windows have a lot of identical programs (System Care Pro, Power System Care, My System Mechanic). It goes without saying that purchasing these kinds of programs isn’t recommended because that would just be wasting money. The issues that are shown to you by fake optimizers are either very minor (which means they don’t affect your computer) or they are completely made up. Furthermore, if you were to purchase such a program and used its offered “fix” features, the program could end up deleting essential files, which could cripple the system.

It’s very unlikely that you installed the program yourself. It’s likely that you installed it together with some other programs without knowing. Strangely enough, some users report that the program appeared after they updated their Macs to Mojave, macOS’s most recent operating system. And according to other users, it’s also possible that those who find Mac Cleanup Pro installed on their Macs may have recently installed a malicious Flash Player update. Whatever the case may be, we strongly recommend you delete Mac Cleanup Pro as soon as possible.

How did Mac Cleanup Pro install?

If you don’t remember installing this PUP, we would not be surprised, as such programs often employ questionable means to install on users computers. If you have recently installed some kind of program, you may not have noticed something, or rather Mac Cleanup Pro, being attached to it. Bundling software happens quite often, particularity with unwanted programs, because it allows programs to install without users noticing. If you want to prevent such installations in the future, it’s important that you pay attention to how you install software. If given the option, always opt for Advanced (Custom) settings, because if anything has been attached, it will be made visible in those settings. If something has indeed been added, you need to deselect it/them. Simply unchecking the box(ex) should be sufficient.

It’s also possible that you installed it thinking it was something else. It’s not uncommon for PUPs to be disguised as some kind of update and pushed to users. Those who are not aware of how programs are updated may click on the notification and download the PUP, thinking it’s an update. It should be noted that legitimate updates are never pushed this way, and an ad is not a reliable source for downloads.

Should you uninstall Mac Cleanup Pro?

As soon as the program installes, it will start showing you messages about identified issues on your computer. This can be quite annoying, particularly when you’re actively using the computer. The program will claim that it has scanned your computer and has identified hundreds of issues. They don’t necessarily mean you have malware, and it will mainly be things related to cache. You should be able to check what exactly the program has identified, and that should give you a good indication about the usefulness of the program. All it really does is delete cache, and that can easily be done manually. And we should mention that system optimizers can do a lot of damage to a computer because they can delete essential files. Microsoft, for example, discourages against using registry cleaners because important registry entries may be cleaned accidentally, and that would cripple the system.

In addition to the annoying notifications, you will also notice an increase in ads while browsing. You will be offered to download other programs, and be warned about supposed malware on your computer. While the program is installed, we suggest you do not interact with any ads because they could be dangerous.

Furthermore, the program may be collecting information about you and your computer usage. It could be tracking what you browse, what site you visit, what you search for, etc. It would also have your IP address. While it’s not exactly personal information, the data collected about you by this program could later be sold to unknown third-parties.

All of this is why we would strongly recommend not buying the full version, no matter what kind of results the program shows you. If you think your Mac could benefit from a system optimizer, there are much more reliable options available.

Mac Cleanup Pro removal

It shouldn’t be difficult to remove Mac Cleanup Pro if you know how to do it. If you wish to do it manually, find the program in Applications (Finder -> Applications) and drag it to the Trash. Right-click on the bin icon and press “Empty Trash”. If this does not work, we suggest you install anti-malware software and have it get rid of the program for you. This should be much quicker.
