About this threat

OnlineMapSearch Toolbar is a browser hijacker and a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that must have entered your computer when you were installing free software. It’s developed by Mindspark Interactive Inc, which is already known to make all kinds of PUPs. It will make changes to your browser, set a weird site as your homepage, encourage you to use an unreliable search engine and possibly redirect you to sponsored content.

OnlineMapSearch ToolbarHijackers can differ in name and appearance but they are all essentially the same. They exist to redirect you. Those redirects might not always be safe. You could be led to some malicious site and end up infecting your computer with malware. While hijackers are not malicious, that does not mean they are harmless. We strongly recommend you delete OnlineMapSearch Toolbar.

Why is it on your device?

You must have recently installed free software and that is why you are now stuck with this hijacker. Granted, you could have installed it yourself but we’re more inclined to believe that it was attached to freeware and you missed it. Those extra offers are not noticeable at first and you need to pay extra close attention to the freeware setup process to be able to prevent installation. Choose Advanced or Custom mode and you will be allowed to manage what gets installed. You will see the boxes of all extra offers there and we suggest you deselect every last one of them. Do not allow any kind of suspicious offer to enter your computer. Unless you enjoy having to remove OnlineMapSearch Toolbar and similar regularly, make sure you always use Advanced and always unmark everything.

Should you uninstall OnlineMapSearch Toolbar?

Browser hijackers are not malicious but they do not belong on your system. The moment they enter a computer, they change browser’s settings and set a different homepage, new tabs and search engine. Those changes usually affect all leading browsers, including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox and they are irreversible, unless you first delete OnlineMapSearch Toolbar from your device. Your new homepage will be promoting a myway search engine, which could insert sponsored content into the results. This would not be unusual. What would also not be surprising is if you were led to malware-ridden websites. Hijackers do not filter through the websites it will show to make sure they are safe, they don’t care. So if you are led to a dangerous website, you could download malware without even noticing. You also gain nothing beneficial by allowing this hijacker to remain on your computer. So the answer is yes, you should remove OnlineMapSearch Toolbar.

OnlineMapSearch Toolbar removal

When it comes to browser hijackers, there are two ways to get rid of them. You can try manual OnlineMapSearch Toolbar removal or you can do it automatically. The former might be more difficult and time-consuming because you’d need to find where the hijacker is hiding yourself. Thus, we recommend you obtain anti-spyware software and have it uninstall OnlineMapSearch Toolbar for you.
