About this infection

Twitter virus refers to various viruses and spam content being spread on Twitter. Just as most popular social networks are, Twitter is often targeted by various spam campaigns. Many infected accounts spread malicious links on Twitter, and when users click on them, they infect their account as well.

Those accounts then start distributing the malicious links, and so on. Because many users are not aware of such spam campaigns, they carelessly click on links, thus spreading the viruses further. Users generally can’t obtain serious malware this way, but smaller infections are still a threat, especially if it can take over one’s Twitter account. The account would then start sending spam, infecting other accounts. Generally, those spam campaigns are stopped pretty soon, but they can still be annoying. If you remember clicking on some weird link and now your account has been compromised, you need to delete Twitter virus.

How do these viruses spread?

Just like any other social media platform, Twitter is full of spam. And unfortunately, not all people can differentiate it from legitimate content, which allows spam to venture further. You might get one of those spam messages via private message or some post in your feed, and if you click on them, you infect your account. It cannot be emphasized enough that you should not click on random links on social media, email, etc. Even if it’s someone you know, don’t just click on links they send you, especially when it happens out of the blue, and from people you don’t regularly keep in touch with. First inquire about what it is, and only when you get a comprehensive response, should you open it. Messages in the likes of ‘OMG look at this’, ‘Look at this video of you’, ‘You have to check this out’ accompanying the links make it especially obvious that it’s spam, thus never click on them.

You might also encounter Twitter viruses on other platforms. There are ads floating around, advertising various Twitter extensions, which are supposedly useful. Like an extension to check who has visited your Twitter profile. You see an ad of it, press on it, it asks that you log in to your account and grant it certain permissions. Once you do, the extension starts spreading spam via your account. Refrain from adding untrustworthy extensions, clicking on weird links, and you should be fine.

Twitter virus removal

If you have noticed unusual activity in your Twitter feed, some virus may have taken over your account. And now you have to remove Twitter virus to take back the account. Check your browser’s extensions for weird add-ons and delete all that you do not use. Check your Twitter settings and privacy for any application having access to your account. Revoke access for all applications that cause suspicion, including those bogus ‘Check who has visited your Twitter profile’. And don’t just add random add-ons to your social media accounts!

After you have done this, employ anti-spyware software and scan your computer for infections that could be inside your computer. While it’s unlikely you can get an actual infection via Twitter, it never hurts to check.
