How do hijackers spread?
Browser hijackers are attached to free software as extra offers that you can choose to install if you want. They are set to install, however, so if you want to prevent installation, you will need to manually deselect them. This can be done in Advanced or Custom settings of the installation process. Thus, do not use Default. In Advanced, everything that has been added will become visible and if there is something, you need to uncheck its/their boxes. After you do this, you can return to installing the freeware. If you do not want to regularly have to remove Search.hidemysearch.com and similar, always use Advanced and make sure you deselect everything.
