Cloudflare investigates global disruption affecting internet access

Cloudflare is investigating a service disruption that has caused access problems for websites and applications across multiple regions. The company reported the issue on its status page and said it is examining an event affecting part of its global network. The disruption was first observed on November 18 and appears to impact services that depend on Cloudflare for content delivery, DNS routing, and network security. Because Cloudflare supports a large portion of global internet traffic, the incident resulted in widespread loading failures and intermittent outages for users. Down platforms include X, ChatGPT, Canva, Grindr, and even Downdetector, a site that tracks when services are down.

The company said portions of its infrastructure in locations such as Guatemala City, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, and Los Angeles were undergoing scheduled maintenance at the time of the outage. It has not been confirmed whether the maintenance activity contributed to the disruption. Cloudflare has also not released details about which systems malfunctioned or the specific cause of the service degradation. Engineers are reviewing network behaviour and routing patterns to identify the source of the issue.

The impact extended beyond individual websites because many monitoring and outage tracking platforms also rely on Cloudflare for DNS and traffic optimisation. Several of these services became unreachable during the disruption, which limited the ability of users and administrators to verify the scope of the problem. Industry analysts note that events affecting large network providers can quickly cascade due to the number of organisations that depend on their infrastructure.

Cloudflare processes tens of millions of requests per second and provides infrastructure for businesses, government agencies, and technology platforms. A service interruption of this size highlights how dependent the modern internet is on a small number of global network providers. Analysts say that when a major provider experiences an outage, even briefly, it can affect services unrelated to one another but connected through shared routing paths.

The company stated that it is working to restore normal performance and will publish more information once the investigation progresses. In the meantime, users may experience intermittent connectivity, increased latency, or temporary site failures when accessing services routed through Cloudflare. Businesses that depend on the platform for content distribution or application availability may observe inconsistent behaviour until network conditions stabilise.
