Google Cloud outage disrupts Revolut, Lloyds and other major UK services

A major Google Cloud outage has disrupted banking, payments and online services across the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, leaving customers unable to complete everyday transactions. Revolut, Lloyds Bank and Halifax are among the financial institutions affected, while users of HSBC and several other services have also reported technical difficulties.

The disruption began at approximately 7:08 a.m. British Summer Time on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Google confirmed that multiple cloud services in its London-based europe-west2 region were experiencing elevated error rates and intermittent network failures, affecting infrastructure used by businesses to operate their applications and websites.

Revolut appears to be among the hardest-hit financial platforms. Customers have reported problems accessing their accounts, making card payments, transferring money, and withdrawing cash from ATMs. Currency exchange, cryptocurrency transactions and investment services have also experienced interruptions.

The digital banking company acknowledged the widespread disruption and said its technical teams were working to restore services. Revolut reassured customers that their funds and personal information remained secure, although it did not immediately provide a timetable for full recovery.

Other British banks have reported problems during the same period. Lloyds Bank confirmed that some online services were experiencing difficulties, although customers could still log into its mobile application. Halifax, which belongs to Lloyds Banking Group, separately acknowledged issues affecting its app and online banking services.

HSBC customers also reported difficulties, according to outage-monitoring platform Downdetector. However, it has not been established whether every reported banking disruption was directly caused by the Google Cloud incident.

The problems extend beyond financial institutions. Reports of service interruptions have also involved delivery company DPD, property platform Rightmove, retailer Screwfix and other online businesses. Some affected organizations have attributed their difficulties to third-party infrastructure providers, while others have not confirmed the underlying cause.

Google said its engineers were investigating the failures and initially reported that no workaround was available. The company has not yet publicly established the technical cause of the disruption.

There is currently no evidence that the outage resulted from a cyberattack or involved the theft of customer information. The incident instead highlights how failures at a major cloud provider can simultaneously disrupt services operated by otherwise unrelated companies.

The situation remains ongoing, with affected businesses working to restore normal operations. The full number of impacted customers and the duration of the disruption have yet to be established.
