Appliance company Aylo, the parent company of the adult content platform Pornhub and other adult websites, has announced that it will restrict access for new users in the United Kingdom from 2 February 2026 as a result of the UK’s age verification requirements under the Online Safety Act 2023. The change means that new visitors from the UK will be unable to access Pornhub’s content unless they complete age verification before the restriction takes effect.
Under the updated rules in the Online Safety Act, which took effect in July 2025, websites hosting adult content must implement robust age-verification systems to ensure that visitors are at least 18 years old before they can view explicit material. The UK communications regulator Ofcom oversees enforcement, including fines or other sanctions for non-compliance. Platforms can meet these obligations using methods such as document uploads, biometric checks, or credit-card verification.
Aylo said it would comply with the law by restricting access rather than maintaining open entry for new UK visitors. The company’s executives described the legal framework as flawed and ineffective, arguing that it has failed to achieve its intended goal of protecting minors while driving traffic to unregulated adult sites. They said that visitors who already created accounts and completed age verification before the cut-off date will continue to access content, but new users must not expect to register or browse Pornhub from UK IP addresses under the new policy.
The company reported that traffic from UK users had fallen sharply since the age verification regime was introduced. Independent web traffic data cited by news organisations indicated that visits to Pornhub from UK addresses declined significantly after stringent checks were enforced. Aylo representatives criticised the practical impact of the law on its service operations and user experience.
Ofcom maintains that the age verification requirements are working to reduce minors’ access to adult content and that many major adult sites have already deployed compliant systems. The regulator has emphasised its authority to impose penalties on platforms that do not meet the legal standards for age assurance. Aylo’s decision to place a restriction rather than expand its age verification infrastructure underlines industry challenges in balancing compliance, user privacy, and operational impacts.
