Instead, it leads to a fraudulent web page designed to resemble an American Express login or verification portal. The counterfeit page shows fields for an account number and password, or email address and password. It may include a familiar logo or simple styling intended to mimic the look of an official service page, but it is hosted on a domain unrelated to American Express.

When the recipient enters login credentials on that fake page, the information is transmitted directly to the attackers. The data is not used to verify anything with the real American Express system. The fraudulent page does not communicate with the legitimate service and does not perform any update or verification. Its sole purpose is to capture login information. After submission, the page can show an error message or redirect the user to the real American Express site so that nothing appears unusual. By that point, the credentials are already captured.
