OpenAI has confirmed that a security incident at Mixpanel exposed limited analytics data connected to some of its API users. The company stated that none of its internal systems were compromised and that sensitive information such as chat content, API keys, passwords, payment details, and government identification documents remained secure. OpenAI said it stopped using Mixpanel for analytics as soon as the company disclosed the breach.
Mixpanel reported that an attacker gained unauthorised access to part of its infrastructure on 9 November. The attacker exported a dataset containing metadata from a subset of OpenAI API accounts. Mixpanel provided the dataset to OpenAI on 25 November so the company could assess the exposure. OpenAI began notifying affected users shortly after receiving the information.
The dataset contained personal and device-related information. According to OpenAI, it included account names linked to OpenAI API accounts, email addresses, approximate geographic data such as city, state, and country, browser and operating system information, referring websites, and user or organisation identifiers. The exposed information did not include chats, authentication credentials, payment records, model outputs, or other sensitive content typically associated with OpenAI products.
OpenAI said it is cooperating with Mixpanel and regulators to review the circumstances of the breach. It also emphasised that the exposed metadata is not enough to access API accounts or any OpenAI services. However, security researchers warn that metadata can still help threat actors craft phishing attempts or impersonation campaigns. The combination of names, email addresses, and device information may allow attackers to build convincing messages that target affected users.
Security analysts note that the incident highlights risks associated with third-party analytics tools. Even when providers do not handle sensitive content, the metadata they store can still be used to profile users. This may expose individuals or organisations to targeted attacks if attackers combine the information with publicly available data or previously leaked material. They argue that companies integrating external tools should closely evaluate vendor security practices and limit the amount of identifiable information shared with analytics providers.
OpenAI has started a review of its vendor relationships to assess whether additional protections or restrictions are needed. The company said it will continue to apply stricter standards for partners that handle user-related data. OpenAI has urged API users to remain cautious of unexpected messages requesting credentials. The company reiterated that it will never ask for passwords or API keys through unsolicited communication.
