Reddit, a US-based social media platform, is considering the use of biometric authentication methods such as Face ID and Touch ID to verify whether users are human, according to statements from chief executive Steve Huffman.

Huffman said the company is exploring “lightweight” verification methods that could confirm human presence without requiring users to disclose their identities. He referred to Face ID and Touch ID as part of a group of technologies known as passkeys, which rely on physical interaction with a device to confirm that a person is present.

Passkeys operate by prompting a user to complete an action such as looking at a device or using a fingerprint sensor. This interaction provides confirmation that a human is behind the account, without transferring biometric data directly to the platform, according to industry explanations of the technology.

Huffman stated that the goal is to determine whether a real person is using the platform while maintaining Reddit’s existing approach to anonymity. He said the company does not require users’ names but still seeks to confirm that “you’re a person.”

The proposal comes as Reddit examines ways to address automated accounts and AI-generated content on the platform. The company has not announced a final decision on whether biometric verification will be implemented, and other options are also being considered.

Huffman also referenced a broader need for tools that can verify human presence without requiring identity documents or personal data. He indicated that third-party solutions could play a role in enabling this type of verification while limiting the amount of information shared with platforms.

The discussion reflects ongoing efforts by Reddit to balance verification measures with user anonymity. The platform has historically allowed pseudonymous participation, and any changes to verification processes would need to align with that model, based on Huffman’s statements.
