Delete FreeCodecPack

What is this extension?

FreeCodecPack is a very questionable extension and adware that tries to conceal its true nature by pretending to be a useful. It promotes itself by claiming to be a tool that will help users play various video files. Therefore, it may be installed knowingly. However, there will be those who will have no idea how the extension got in. If you do not recall making the installation, it’s very possible that it installed via freeware bundles. This method involves attaching such dubious extensions to free programs in a way that allows them to install alongside. Those attachments are generally hidden, thus a lot of users end up installing them.

While the extension is certainly questionable, it’s not exactly malicious. It does, however, pose certain threat to your computer, which is why you should delete FreeCodecPack as soon as possible. It will deliver advertisements to you, filling your screen with them. In order to know what kind of content you are more likely to interact with, the adware will collect information about you and your browsing habits. It should be noted that those ads may expose you to highly unreliable content, possibly even malware, thus refrain from clicking on ads while the adware is still present.

How did it install?

It’s available as an extension on various pages so you could have installed it yourself. However, if you don’t have recollection of doing that, it probably entered via the bundling method. This is a popular means of distribution among unwanted program developers, because it allows their products to install without the users even noticing. They come attached to free programs as extra offers, and if the users does not want them, he/she is supposed to deselect them. However, seeing as they are usually hidden, a lot of users end up not deselecting them. In order to be able to prevent unwanted installations, you first need to pay attention to how you install programs. You need to choose Advanced (Custom) settings during software installation, as those settings will make all offers visible. If there is anything attached to the program, you will be able to deselect it. Unless you are completely sure about the offer, we suggest you deselect all the offers because they’re more likely to be troublesome than useful.

What does it do?

Once the questionable extension installs, you will start seeing an increase in advertisements while browsing. They will show up in all browsers you have installed, whether it’s Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. The adverts could also start popping up on sites that didn’t usually have ads before. A lot of those ads will also have something in the lines of “Provided by FreeCodecPack”, which will help you figure out what is causing them. The ads will also get increasingly more customized, advertising things you may be interested in. That is due to the fact that adware collects information about users. Data such as, websites visited, content interacted with, search queries, etc., will be collected by the adware. You will gain nothing by keeping it installed, thus remove FreeCodecPack.

Clicking on the ads is not recommended because you may be exposed to unreliable content. They could be hosted on questionable domains, or harbor malware. You should be especially wary of ads encouraging you to download some kind of program or update. No program will ever offer updates via ads, thus all of the “You need to update” banners are a scam. Same goes for programs. If you need to install something, always use only legitimate sources, such as official websites or browser stores. Never ads. Otherwise, you’re endangering your computer.
