A hidden camera discovered inside a UK government building has triggered a security investigation and renewed concerns about espionage risks within Whitehall.

The device was found concealed in a ceiling panel at the Marsham Street government complex in Westminster, according to reports. The building houses both the Home Office and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and is used by hundreds of civil servants.

The discovery was reportedly made within the last two months in a communal area rather than in ministerial offices. Officials launched inquiries to determine who installed the camera, how long it had been in place, and whether any recordings were made. Security officials and ministers were informed after the device was found.

The incident has attracted particular attention because officials working in the building were involved in the planning process that approved China’s new embassy complex in London earlier this year. The embassy proposal generated debate over national security concerns before receiving approval.

There is currently no evidence linking the camera to China, Russia, or any other foreign government. Reports on the incident stress that investigators have not identified who was responsible for placing the device in the building.

Staff reportedly reacted with alarm after learning of the discovery, with concerns raised about whether conversations or activities inside the building may have been monitored. Questions also remain about how the camera was installed in a government facility without being detected sooner.

The discovery prompted calls for a full investigation from opposition politicians. Alex Burghart, the Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, described the incident as extremely serious and called for authorities to establish who installed the device, how long it remained in place, and whether any sensitive information was compromised.

Government departments have declined to comment on specific security matters. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government said it does not discuss security arrangements.

The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the origin of the camera and whether any information was collected while it was operating inside the government complex.
