Matterhorn Framework Removal

What is Matterhorn Framework

Earlier this week, Mac users started reporting that they are getting Apple alerts saying “Matterhorn.Framework will damage your computer”, “HPDeviceMonitoring.framework will damage your computer”, “HPDM.framework will damage your computer”, and similar alerts. In addition to these alerts, users were also unable to use their HP printers, as trying would show the alert. No matter what users pressed on the alert, it would reappear again and again, which would understandably annoy users.

This issue in particular only affects Catalina and Mojave Mac operating systems, High Sierra and older version users do not appear to be having any issues. This issue will also only appear on Macs connected to HP printers.

Alerts saying that something will damage the computer are shown by Gatekeeper, Apple’s security feature. It usually detects potentially malicious programs and prevents them from causing harm. However, this “Matterhorn Framework will damage your computer” does not mean that malware is on your Mac.

Once users started reporting on this issue, HP Inc told the Register that the reason this is happening is because they asked Apple to revoke its printer driver code-signing certificates, but it backfired.

“We unintentionally revoked credentials on some older versions of Mac drivers. This caused a temporary disruption for those customers and we are working with Apple to restore the drivers. In the meantime, we recommend users experiencing this problem to uninstall the HP driver and use the native AirPrint driver to print to their printer,” a HP Inc spokesperson said.

How to remove “Matterhorn.Framework will damage your computer” issue

For some users, reinstalling the HP printer worked, at least temporarily. Another workaround may be to use AirPrint. However, ultimately, the issue will have to be solved by HP and Apple. The good news is that both sides are aware of the issue so it should be fixed soon.
