About MacPerformance Virus

MacPerformance Virus refers to an adware program that will show you loads of ads and try to gain control over your browser. As is obvious from the name, it only affects Mac computers. It’s not malware exactly, as its not as dangerous, but it’s not something you should keep on your computer. Technically, MacPerformance Virus is a potentially unwanted program, but many users will refer to it as a virus because of its behavior. As soon as it is installed, it will start showing you loads of ads, and will even try to gain control over your browser, which would allow it to access browsing information. It shows very clear signs of being installed on a computer, but some users may not realize that it’s something that should not be installed.

It first makes itself known by showing an alert that says MacPerformance wants to get access to the browser. Even if you pick “Don’t Allow”, it may still take control over your browser. Thus, it would be best if you don’t engage with the alert at all. Instead, if you see it, you need to look for and delete MacPerformance Virus from your Mac computer.

If you are confused about how adware managed to enter your computer, you need to familiarize yourself with freeware bundling. It’s a method used by unwanted program developers to spread adware and hijackers. Essentially, unwanted programs (adware, browser hijackers, etc.) are attached to freeware as extra offers, which are permitted to install alongside the freeware. To prevent these additional installations, the offers need to be deselected manually. However, because the offers are usually hidden, a lot of users don’t deselect them because they simply don’t notice them. If you continue reading, we will explain how to correctly install freeware.

Adware uses freeware bundling to install

When you download free programs, even from completely legitimate websites, you need to pay attention to how you install them. A lot of them will have extra items attached to them, and they will install alongside the freeware, unless you manually prevent them from doing so. In order to do that, pay attention to the process, and most importantly opt for Advanced (Custom) settings. Those settings will show you a list of added offers, which otherwise would be hidden. Once the added offers are visible, you need to deselect them. Simply unchecking their boxes will prevent them from installing. This takes mere seconds to do. However, if you allow the offers to install, you might spend a long time trying to get rid of them later on. And you will want to get rid of them, seeing as they’re unwanted programs.

What does MacPerformance Virus do?

Once the adware installs, your computer will start acting weird. A notifications will constantly pop up on your screen, asking you to allow MacPerformance access to your browser. It can ask to control any browser you have installed, whether it’s Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari. Since it looks like a legitimate system notification, we would not be surprised if users pressed “OK” and did not realize that they were essentially allowing a potentially dangerous programs to access their browsing data. While the alert gives the option of not allowing access, it’s best if you don’t interact with it at all. If access has been granted, the unwanted program may be able to get your browsing information, including what sites you visit, login credentials, etc.

In addition to the weird alert, you will also see an increase in ads while browsing because adware is aiming to earn as much revenue as possible. You will get redirected to weird sites, see pop-ups and banner ads. Engaging with them is not suggested as adware ads are not exactly reliable. They can expose you to unreliable content, scams and even malware. Since it’s difficult to differentiate legitimate ads from adware generated ones, you should ignore ads altogether while adware is present on the computer in order to avoid exposing your computer to harmful content. Be particularly careful of ads that ask you to install updates/programs, and those that warn you about supposed malware infections on your computer. Those kinds of ads are either trying to get you to call tech-support scammers or to install questionable software, which could turn out to be malware.

If you are unsure whether what you are dealing with is MacPerformance Virus, you can easily check by opening your Activity Monitor. Open Finder, select Applications, then Utilities, and double click on Activity Monitor. There you will a list of active processes. Look for MacPerformance among them. If you find it, you are, in fact, dealing with an adware program, which needs to be gotten rid of right away.
