Remove Nautilus Notes browser hijacker

Nautilus Notes is a browser hijacker disguised as a productivity extension for creating and organizing sticky notes on the browser’s new tab page. Although its note-taking functionality may work as advertised, installing the extension also makes changes to Chrome that are unrelated to taking notes. Most importantly, it replaces the default search engine with under-cover.info and controls what users see when opening a new tab.

 

 

This combination of legitimate-looking functionality and unwanted browser modification makes Nautilus Notes particularly deceptive. Someone searching for a convenient way to keep notes inside Chrome may install the extension for that purpose without expecting it to interfere with web searches.

Once Nautilus Notes has been added to the browser, newly opened tabs display the extension’s note-taking interface. More significantly, searches entered through Chrome’s address bar are sent to under-cover.info. This means that users who previously configured another search provider no longer send their searches directly to that service.

Under-cover.info does not provide original search results. During testing, the website redirected submitted queries to Yahoo Search. The destination could potentially differ depending on circumstances such as the user’s location. Therefore, seeing results from a recognizable search provider at the end of the process does not mean that the browser configuration has returned to normal. The query was still routed through a search service selected by the hijacker rather than by the user.

Nautilus Notes is also not the only extension known to promote under-cover.info. The same address has been associated with other browser-hijacking extensions offering similar new-tab or productivity features.

The browser changes introduced by Nautilus Notes are important because browser hijackers can make it difficult to maintain preferred settings. Software in this category may prevent access to certain browser options or restore unwanted values after users attempt to change them. Consequently, simply selecting another search engine may not resolve the problem while the responsible extension remains installed.

Privacy is another reason to avoid browser hijackers. Software of this type commonly has an interest in browsing information such as URLs visited, pages viewed, search terms, browser cookies, and IP addresses. Such information can have value for advertising and profiling, and data gathered by unwanted software may potentially be shared with third parties.

For users who intentionally installed Nautilus Notes because of its sticky-note functionality, the presence of a working feature should not be confused with evidence that the extension is trustworthy. A browser add-on can provide the advertised functionality while simultaneously making changes that users would not otherwise choose.

If under-cover.info suddenly becomes the default search engine and Nautilus Notes is present in Chrome, removing the extension should be part of restoring the browser. Users should also inspect their search engine and new-tab settings afterward and remove other unfamiliar extensions if any are present.

How Nautilus Notes gets installed

Unlike browser hijackers that depend entirely on concealed installations, Nautilus Notes has been available through the Chrome Web Store as a productivity extension. It has also been promoted through a dedicated website encouraging visitors to install it for its sticky-note functionality.

Availability through an official extension marketplace does not by itself establish that an add-on behaves in a desirable way. Before installing a browser extension, users should examine what permissions it requests and determine whether those permissions are actually necessary for the advertised functionality. An extension marketed primarily as a note-taking utility, for example, deserves additional scrutiny if it also wants control over search-related browser settings.

Browser hijackers can additionally reach users through bundled software installations. Free programs obtained from freeware websites, free file-hosting services, or peer-to-peer networks may be packaged with additional extensions or applications. These extras are easier to overlook when users proceed through an installer without reviewing its available options.

Choosing Custom or Advanced installation settings, when offered, can reveal additional components that would otherwise be installed together with the desired program. Offers to install unfamiliar extensions, change search providers, add toolbars, or modify browser settings should be declined unless the user specifically wants those changes.

Intrusive advertisements and spam browser notifications can also direct users to pages promoting browser extensions. For this reason, unexpected prompts claiming that an extension is required to continue browsing, improve searches, access content, or add browser functionality should not be accepted without first investigating the software independently.

Remove Nautilus Notes browser hijacker

The same caution should be applied even when an extension provides a feature that appears genuinely useful. In the case of Nautilus Notes, the sticky-note functionality does not change the fact that the extension modifies Chrome to promote under-cover.info. Removing the hijacker and restoring the preferred search configuration eliminates the forced relationship between normal browser searches and the promoted website.

The easiest way to remove Nautilus Notes browser hijacker is to use an anti-virus program. While hijackers are not serious infections, they can be tricky to remove manually. Remove Nautilus Notes from Windows 8

Right-click in the lower left corner of the screen. Once Quick Access Menu shows up, select Control Panel choose Programs and Features and select to Uninstall a software.

Uninstall Nautilus Notes from Windows 7

Click Start → Control Panel → Programs and Features → Uninstall a program.

Delete Nautilus Notes from Windows XP

Click Start → Settings → Control Panel. Locate and click → Add or Remove Programs.

Remove Nautilus Notes from Mac OS X

Click Go button at the top left of the screen and select Applications. Select applications folder and look for Nautilus Notes or any other suspicious software. Now right click on every of such entries and select Move to Trash, then right click the Trash icon and select Empty Trash.

Terminate the unwanted extensions from Internet Explorer

1. Tap the Gear icon and go to Manage Add-ons.
2. Pick Toolbars and Extensions and eliminate all suspicious entries (other than Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Oracle or Adobe)

Change Internet Explorer homepage if it was changed by virus:

1. Tap the gear icon (menu) on the top right corner of your browser and click Internet Options.

Reset your browser

1. Click the Gear icon and move to Internet Options.
2. Open the Advanced tab and press Reset.
3. Choose Delete personal settings and pick Reset one more time.
4. Tap Close and leave your browser.
5. If you were unable to reset your browsers, employ a reputable anti-malware and scan your entire computer with it.

Erase Nautilus Notes from Google Chrome

1. Access menu (top right corner of the window) and pick Settings.
2. Choose Extensions.
3. Eliminate the suspicious extensions from the list by clicking the Trash bin next to them.

Reset Google Chrome homepage and default search engine if it was hijacker by virus

3. Press Reset button at the end of the page.
4. Tap Reset button one more time in the confirmation box.
5. If you cannot reset the settings, purchase a legitimate anti-malware and scan your PC.

Remove Nautilus Notes from Mozilla Firefox

1. In the top right corner of the screen, press menu and choose Add-ons (or tap Ctrl+Shift+A simultaneously).
2. Move to Extensions and Add-ons list and uninstall all suspicious and unknown entries.

Change Mozilla Firefox homepage if it was changed by virus:

1. Tap on the menu (top right corner), choose Options.
2. On General tab delete malicious URL and enter preferable website or click Restore to default.
3. Press OK to save these changes.

Reset your browser

1. Open the menu and tap Help button.
2. Select Troubleshooting Information.
3. Press Refresh Firefox.
4. In the confirmation box, click Refresh Firefox once more.
5. If you are unable to reset Mozilla Firefox, scan your entire computer with a trustworthy anti-malware.

Uninstall Nautilus Notes from Safari (Mac OS X)

1. Access the menu.
2. Pick Preferences.
3. Go to the Extensions Tab.
4. Tap the Uninstall button next to the undesirable Nautilus Notes and get rid of all the other unknown entries as well. If you are unsure whether the extension is reliable or not, simply uncheck the Enable box in order to disable it temporarily.
5. Restart Safari.
