Remove NetMeterX

About NetMeterX

NetMeterX is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware, advertised as a tool that helps monitor Internet speed and usage. It’s not exactly the most useful program, and it’s unlikely that you happened upon it yourself due to the amount of similar programs available. You probably don’t even know how the program installed in the first place. It probably used the bundling method to install, which basically means it was attached to freeware as an extra offer and you did not notice. When those offers go unnoticed, they are permitted to install alongside. We will explain this a bit more in the following section.

The program is also classified as adware because it brings about ads and redirects. It’s not a malicious infection exactly, but it’s not something that should remain installed either. After the ads start appearing, you certainly won’t want to keep it. In addition to the regular ads, it may also redirect you to pages that as you to allow notifications. This seems to be a new trend among adware creators because we have reported on similar adware recently (Special-promotions.online). Do not allow the notifications if you are ever redirected because if you do, you will start seeing ads on your desktop. While the adware is installed on your computer, it’s also not recommended to interact with any ads since they could be malicious. Adware is known to expose users to scams and malware because it does not check the security of the ads before showing them.

It’s doubtful you are using the program, and since it could be putting your computer in danger, you should delete NetMeterX. If you are unsure about how to do that, proceed to the last section of this article.

How does NetMeterX install?

The program uses the bundling method to install. That’s how it installed on your computer because it’s very doubtful you actually wanted it. The bundling method is popular among unwanted program developers because it allows programs to install unnoticed. The unwanted items are attached to free programs as extra offers and are preselected, which allows them to install alongside. During freeware installation, those offers are generally hidden, unless the user opts for Advanced (Custom) settings. Those settings will make all extra offers visible, and you will be able to deselect everything. While it may not seem that way, it’s important that you always deselect the offers. It takes mere seconds to do it and requires minimal effort. And once the offers are installed, they are difficult to get rid of.

Should you uninstall NetMeterX?

The program supposedly allows you to check your Internet usage and speed, but what it really aims to do is expose you to advertisements. Adware programs can affect all popular browsers, including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox so it might not matter which browser you are using. You will see a variety of different ads, from banners to pop-ups and redirects. The latter can be really annoying because it’s difficult to avoid them. But you should not interact with them.

Some redirects may take you to weird sites that ask you to allow a site to send you notifications. If you press “Allow Notifications”, you will essentially allow the site to show you ads on your desktop. Those ads would appear as notifications at the bottom-left corner. Be careful to not press on them, however tempting they may seem. They will merely expose you to scams and malware. Those notifications will keep appearing until you have revoked the permission. You can find out how to do that in the last section.

You might encounter ads asking you to download programs or updates, and if you were not aware of this, ads often push malware by concealing it as updates. Less cautious users end up downloading malware thinking it’s an update or some software. This is why you need to choose your download sources very carefully. Only download from reputable sources, like official websites/stores. Never advertisements.

Another classic scam you might encounter is one that claims you have won something. Commonly, those scams claim that you are a lucky visitor and thus, have won a prize. The prize is usually an expensive gadget that would be hard to resist. In order to receive the prize, you are asked to pay a small fee and provide your personal information. That small fee you agree to pay would subscribe you to some service that takes some amount of money every month. And your personal information would be used to scam you further. You’d start getting weird phone calls and spam emails.

We doubt such a program is worth all the hassle that comes with it. So instead of putting up with it, it may be best to get rid of it.
