What is .osiris?

.osiris is the file extension added to files encrypted by Osiris ransomware. It’s a new version of the notorious Locky ransomware, and that is bad news for victims. Locky remains uncrackable by malware researchers, which means there’s little chance you will get your files back. What ransomware does is, it takes your files hostage and then demands that you pay a certain amount of money to restore them. It’s quite a profitable business because ransomware developers ask for big sums of money.

It should be noted that it’s incredibly easy to infect computers with ransomware, all users need to do is open an infected email attachment, and the virus downloads onto the computer. In any cases .osiris ransomware will demand that you pay a certain amount of money. Which we don’t suggest you do. Paying does not guarantee file decryption. What you should do is ignore the demands and get your files from backup. Before you do, you must remove .osiris from your computer.

How does .osiris act?

Spam email attachments remain the most popular way of spreading ransomware. Even though it has been done for a while now, users are still not aware of potential dangers lurking behind emails. Once .osiris is on your computer, it will use RSA-2048 and AES-128 encryption algorithms and make your files unreadable. Your files will be renamed into [8 random symbols]–[4 random symbols]–[4 random symbols]–[8 random symbols]–[12 random symbols].osiris. A ransom note, identical to the ones used by all versions of Locky, will inform you that your files have been encrypted. You will be given links to Wikipedia articles about encryption algorithms and be informed that decryption is only possible with their decryption tool. Which is, unfortunately, true. You will be asked to download the Tor browser and access a website where you can buy the decryption tool. We suggest you think carefully about paying. Not only will you be supporting the cyber criminals, but you also risk paying for nothing. Even if you pay, file decryption is not guaranteed. We suggest you delete .osiris.

1. Click on Start and select Shutdown.
2. Choose Restart and click OK.
3. Start tapping F8 when your PC starts loading.
4. Under Advanced Boot Options, choose Safe Mode with Networking.
5. Open your browser and download the anti-malware utility.
6. Use the utility to remove .osiris

Remove .osiris from Windows 8/Windows 10

1. On the Windows login screen, press the Power button.
2. Tap and hold Shift and select Restart.
3. Go to Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Start Settings.
4. Choose Enable Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking under Startup Settings.
5. Click Restart.

5. Type in cd restore and tap Enter.
6. Type in rstrui.exe and press Enter.
7. Click Next in the new window and select the restore point prior to the infection.
8. Click Next again and click Yes to begin the system restore.

Delete .osiris from Windows 8/Windows 10

1. Click the Power button on the Windows login screen.
2. Press and hold Shift and click Restart.

5. In Command Prompt, input cd restore and tap Enter.
