Remove Search Marquis

What is Search Marquis

Search Marquis is a generic browser hijacker that affects Mac computers. Signs of it being present on the computer include searchmarquis.com opening every time you launch your browser, as well as unwanted changes to your browser’s settings. As far as infections go, this browser hijacker is quite noticeable considering that an unknown website will load instead of your usual homepage. You will also notice that your search engine will be different. Browser hijackers promote questionable search engines that insert sponsored content into search results in order to redirect users to certain sites for the purpose of generating traffic and revenue.

Before you get too worried, it’s not a dangerous infection that will cause damage to your computer or your files. It focuses on exposing you to advertisement content above all else, so you don’t need to worry about direct damage. However, it should be mentioned that the hijacker will attempt to redirect you to all kinds of websites, and not all of them will necessarily be safe. Some of the sites you get redirected to may hide malware or promote scams, so while hijackers aren’t directly harmful, they can cause issues.

If you find this browser hijacker installed on your Mac, the sooner you remove Search Marquis, the better. It can be done manually if you prefer but using anti-spyware software would be easier.

How to avoid browser hijacker infections

Browser hijackers, adware, and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) use the software bundling method to install on users’ computers without being noticed. The way software bundling works is the above-mentioned infections come attached to free software as extra offers and are permitted to install alongside automatically, without requiring any additional permission from users. This is why this method is quite frowned upon, and programs that use it are often detected as potential threats by anti-virus programs.

The offers that come added to free software are optional, so you can avoid their installations. The reason many users end up accidentally allowing these unwanted installations is that the offers are initially hidden. When installing free programs, many users opt for Default settings because the installation window recommends them but those settings are exactly why users end up installing the offers. Default settings hide the offers and allow their installation automatically. If you use Advanced or Custom settings, all added offers will be made visible, and you will get the option to deselect all offers. Simply unchecking the boxes is enough. Once you have done that, you can continue installing the program.

Keep in mind that some of the offers may seem useful at first sight but it’s still not recommended to install them. No legitimate program will use software bundling to install, and any program that does should not be on your computer. If you allow these unwanted installations, your computer will quickly fill up with junk programs that can be difficult to get rid of once installed.

Can a browser hijacker harm your computer?

As soon as this browser hijacker installs on your Mac, you will know. Your browser’s settings, whether you’re using Safari, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox, will have changed settings. In particular, searchmarquis.com be set as your homepage/new tabs. Your default search engine will also be changed. You will not be able to undo these setting changes while the hijacker remains installed because it will just keep making the changes over and over again.

The hijacker intends to redirect you to sponsored websites, which is why it will push a questionable search that alters search results to include certain links. You will be shown sponsored results even when doing a search via your browser’s address bar because the questionable search engine is set as your default search engine. Those results will have very little to do with what you were searching for so there is no need to interact with them. Actually, you should actively avoid clicking on them because you could be exposed to dangerous websites that hide malware or promote scams. So even if the hijacker is not directly harmful, the same cannot be said about its redirects.
