Remove SearchMyFile Virus

About this infection

SearchMyFile is an adware program that probably infiltrated your computer via freeware bundles. It’s one of those infections that is advertised as a legitimate programs but will actually cause ads to appear on your screen and disrupt your browsing. It will present itself as a useful program that supposedly helps you manage files on your computer so some users might install it themselves.

If you don’t remember installing it, it likely was attached to freeware as an extra offer that you did not notice. When those items go unnoticed, they are permitted to install alongside the program because you did not deselect them. It’s not difficult nor time-consuming to do, the problem is that users tend to rush when installing programs, thus missing all indications of something being attached. Adware is not exactly a malicious programs, in the sense that it will not harm your device directly, but because it can expose you to unreliable ads, it still poses a certain threat to your computer. You could end up pressing on something malicious accidentally, and that could lead to a serious infection. There are better file managers out there, ones that will not expose you to unreliable content and constantly pester you with ads, so uninstall SearchMyFile.

How does it spread?

Like mentioned above, adware usually spreads via freeware bundles. It is attached to freeware as an extra offers, one you need to deselect during installation. These attached unwanted items are why it’s important that you follow program installations carefully. We suggest reading all bits of information provided during program installation, and selecting Advanced or Custom settings. Default (Basic or Quick) will not show extra offers so you will not be able to deselect them. Advanced, however, will make them visible, and if something does indeed appear, uncheck its/their box. Only after you have deselected all the offers should you continue the installation. There is also a slight possibility that you installed it yourself, thinking it’s a useful program. However, next time you want to install something, look into the program more thoroughly before you do. This could save you a lot of trouble.

Why delete SearchMyFile

The program may act as it’s supposed to but you will quickly notice that it generates a lot of advertisements in various forms. They may appear as pop-ups, pop-unders, banners or regular ads, and affect all browsers you have installed, including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Naturally, because of the amount of ads, your browser will slow down and crash more often. This can quickly get on your nerves. In addition to this, you will notice that the ads looks rather dubious. They might ask you to install weird programs, participate in surveys or warn you about supposed malware infections. Engaging with ads at all while adware is present is not recommended because you could be exposed to dangerous content. Be wary of programs that are being promoted this way and never download anything from a pop-up. You might end up obtaining malware. If you want to download something, use reliable sources. Surveys promising free things are usually aiming to get private information so never provide any data about yourself, even if you are offered the latest iPhone. If you did give away your name, home and email addresses, and phone number, that info could be used to scam you, so be wary. And those malware warnings you get in your browsers are merely scams trying to get you to install questionable programs or even malware. Only trust your anti-spyware software with alerts about malware, all other warnings appearing in your browser are fake.

SearchMyFile removal

You may find the program useful but dealing with all the potentially dangerous ads is not worth it.
