Remove Surfilters

About Surfilters

Surfilters is a browser hijacker, also referred to as a redirect virus. Technically, browser hijackers are not considered to be malware and are generally not malicious but they can still cause frustration. They infect your computer without you noticing, make changes to your browser and then attempt to redirect you to sponsored pages.

Surfilters offers the service of filtering the search results so that you do not stumble upon inappropriate content. This may seem like a useful function to some users but users rarely get exposed to explicit content unless they specifically search for it. In addition, the hijacker entered your computer without your permission, via free software, therefore you should not allow it to stay. It may also be able to expose you to malicious content by redirecting you to malware-ridden web pages. This is why you should delete Surfilters.

Should you remove Surfilters?

Like all hijackers, Surfilters will change your browser’s settings and you will have surfilters.com as your homepage and new tabs. You might not even be asked to permit these changes. This will affect all popular browsers on your computer, be it Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox so you cannot run away from the problem by changing the browser. You might also struggle with trying to change the settings back to what they were because some hijackers employ helper tools to prevent you from changing the settings. If you encounter this, you would need to first uninstall Surfilters and only then change the settings. You will be provided with a search engine and if you were to use it, you may be exposed to sponsored content. Browser hijackers aim to redirect users to sponsored pages because that is how they make income. Those redirects could be dangerous as well because hijackers usually do not filter through the web pages to make sure they are all safe. If you were to enter one that is full of malware, you could end up with a serious infection on your computer. Do not allow this hijacker to stay on your computer. Delete Surfilters.

How is Surfilters distributed?

You installed Surfilters along with free software. To avoid this in the future, always use Advanced or Customs settings during freeware installation and deselect what has been added. You can only do that in those settings so if you use Default, you will end up allowing all added items to install. It does not take up any extra time as all you have to do is uncheck a couple of boxes. After you do this you can proceed to install the freeware. Do not rush through the installation process because you will end up having to remove Surfilters or similar again.
