Reddit is preparing to limit how much content visitors can view without signing into an account, marking a significant change to the platform’s long-standing approach to public access. The company says the restrictions will help prevent unauthorized data collection while allowing it to offer more personalized experiences to registered users.
CEO Steve Huffman announced the plans in late October 2026, explaining that Reddit intends to become a primarily logged-in platform. For more than two decades, visitors have been able to browse most discussions without creating an account, but the company now considers that model increasingly difficult to maintain.
The changes will initially be tested in selected markets outside the United States during the fourth quarter of 2026. Reddit has not identified which countries will participate or specified exactly which content will require authentication. A broader rollout will depend on the results of the initial tests.
Huffman indicated that Reddit’s homepage should remain publicly accessible. Visitors arriving through search engines or external links would also be able to view at least the page they originally requested. However, browsing additional discussions and communities could require signing in.
A major reason for the restrictions is the growing demand for Reddit discussions among artificial intelligence companies and automated data collectors. According to the company, much of the unauthorized scraping activity occurs through pages accessible to visitors who are not logged in.
Reddit intends to continue providing access to its content through commercial licensing agreements. The platform already has data-sharing arrangements with Google and OpenAI and has pursued legal action against other AI companies and scraping services over alleged unauthorized collection.
The announcement also comes as Reddit faces declining traffic from search engines. During October, search referrals fell by more than one million per week on average. Huffman attributed part of the decline to AI-powered search features that answer questions directly, reducing the need for users to visit the original discussion pages.
Requiring accounts could also strengthen Reddit’s advertising business. Logged-in users provide additional engagement signals, including voting activity and community preferences, which can help the platform personalize recommendations and advertisements.
Reddit says the transition will not require users to provide real names or identity documents. The company also plans to restore a read-only incognito mode in its mobile application and continue allowing users to opt out of personalized advertising.
