Remove Chrominio Message Center virus

About this infection

Chrominio Message Center virus refers to a pop-up that claims you have to update your Chromium browser. A lot of users get confused about whether the pop-up is legitimate as it has the official Chromium logo in it, and no close button. However, it’s most certainly not an actual update.

These pop-ups are caused by adware, which could have sneaked into your computer with another program. It’s not malicious, and the worse it will do is show you intrusive pop-ups. However, if you interact with the pop-up and download the offered ‘update’, you could end up with all kinds of malware. If you did download the supposed update, you need to check your computer for malware immediately. Even if there are no obvious signs, something malicious could still be lurking. And in any case, you will have to get rid of adware in order to remove Chrominio Message Center virus.

It’s very likely you picked up the adware when installing a free program. Often, unwanted programs are attached to legitimate ones as extra offers in what’s called the bundling method. Those unwanted programs can install without users noticing, so it’s popular among various developers.

How does it spread?

The bundling method is often used by potentially unwanted program (PUP) developers because it allows programs to install without users noticing. Adware, browser hijackers, PUPs, etc. are attached to legitimate programs as extra offers, which are authorized to install alongside. To prevent them from doing so, you need to deselect them during installation. This is done in Advanced or Custom settings. Opt for those instead of Default when installing a program, and you will be shown all offers that have been attached. When the offers become visible, you can deselect all of them. Simply uncheck the boxes and continue with the installation.

More information about this virus

The pop-up asking you to update will appear randomly as you browse and not allow you to close it. There will be no X button and Cancel. The only option you are given is “Configure”. The message in the pop-up will say that a new version of Chromium is available, and whether you’d like to install it. It asks if you want to install it but it doesn’t actually give you a choice. In this kind of situation, we would suggest you open Task Manager and end the process manually. You shouldn’t install the supposed ‘update’ because it would be some kind of virus infection. To delete Chrominio Message Center virus from your device, you will need to erase the adware. If you scroll down, you will see instructions for that.

The pop-up may look legitimate at first sight due to the official logo used but these kinds of alerts are never legitimate. This pop-up is very intrusive, it will prevent you from using your browser normally, and legitimate update alerts will never be this way. And if you have automatic updates turned on, you wouldn’t even be notified about an upcoming update.

You need to be very careful about what you download and where you get your programs from. Updates should never be installed via pop-ups or ads, always go to the official website if you are asked to download an update. Same goes for programs. Only use trusted sources.
