Thousands of Vodafone Australia customers were left unable to make calls, send messages, or access mobile data after a major network disruption struck the carrier’s services nationwide.
The outage began during the morning hours on Thursday, triggering a surge of complaints from users across Australia who reported losing connectivity and seeing their devices switch to emergency-only mode. More than 8,000 incident reports were logged on outage-monitoring platform Downdetector as customers struggled to access Vodafone’s network.
Vodafone later confirmed that the disruption was caused by a failure at one of its network hubs. According to the company, the issue was identified and resolved, with services gradually returning throughout the day. However, Vodafone warned that some customers could continue experiencing intermittent connectivity problems while devices reconnected to the network.
The outage affected customers nationwide, disrupting access to voice calls, mobile data, and other services relied upon by individuals and businesses. Many users took to social media to report widespread service interruptions and difficulties connecting to the network.
Vodafone said emergency Triple Zero calls remained available during the disruption because affected devices could connect through alternative mobile networks when necessary. The company also advised customers to restart their phones to help restore normal service once the network became available again.
Recent years have seen several major outages affect Australian telecom providers, prompting regulators and consumer advocates to push for stronger safeguards and more reliable emergency communications systems. Industry groups have warned that large-scale outages can disrupt banking services, business operations, government services, and access to emergency assistance.
Australian Communications Consumer Action Network chief executive Carol Bennett criticized the recurring nature of major telecommunications outages, arguing that consumers should not be expected to treat widespread service disruptions as a normal part of everyday life.
Vodafone apologized for the disruption and said it is reviewing the incident to determine exactly what happened and identify ways to strengthen network resilience. The company stated that most services were restored within hours of the outage being detected.
