This extension was developed by a known PUP developer Mindspark Interactive Network, and besides being promoted on the official website, it could also be spread via freeware bundles. This is why it is important that users pay close attention to how they install programs, because otherwise, they will end up with all kinds of unwanted programs. This is not a malicious infection but if it performs changes you might not agree with and then does not allow you to reverse them, it should not be allowed to remain installed on your system. It should also be noted that in certain cases, when users use the provided search engine, they could be redirected to malicious websites, where a malware infection could be obtained. So while these kinds of extensions are not malicious themselves, keeping them might bring unfortunate consequences. So if you find it installed on your computer, we recommend you delete ConvertersNow.

Distribution methods

It is a legitimate extension so you can obtain it from its official website, but it may also be installed via freeware bundles, without the user noticing. A lot of potentially unwanted programs are added to freeware because otherwise, they would not be installed as often. If you want to avoid these unwanted installations, be more careful about how you install programs. Always follow the process carefully, read everything and check Advanced or Custom settings for added offers. If anything has been added, it should appear in those settings, and you need to deselect it/them. After you uncheck the boxes, you can proceed to install the freeware. However, in the future, you should also refrain from downloading programs from unsecure sources, and stick to legitimate stores/sites so that you are properly informed if the programs comes with additional offers.

What does it do?

Whether you willingly installed it or not, you will notice the changes it makes almost immediately. It will change your homepage, new tabs to its promoted website, search.myway.com, and set you a different search engine. If you didn’t install it yourself, the changes might come as a surprise. Especially when you realize that you cannot undo them. The hijacker will just keep reversing them. So until you remove ConvertersNow, you are stuck with the changes. The extension is advertised as a conversion tool so your new homepage will have links to services that convert files. There will also be shortcuts to certain websites, like YouTube and Facebook. The website will also be promoting a search engine. It can be found in all Mindspark products, so you might have encountered it before. If you decide to use it, be careful of sponsored content, as it could be inserted into the results. PUPs and browsers hijackers aim to redirect users to sponsored websites because it helps site owners earn income from traffic. Those sites might have little to do with what you were searching for, but should be relatively harmless. However, certain redirects could lead to malicious websites, where you could encounter malware if you are not careful. Extensions that enter computers unknowingly to the user, and proceed to perform unauthorized activity should not remain installed on your computer.
