Mssecsvc.exe is a component of the infamous WannaCry (also known as WanaDecrypt0r and Wana Decrypt0r 2.0) ransomware virus that made headlines all over the world mid last month. It is doubtful you noticed Mssecsvc.exe without the help of anti-malware software. And since Mssecsvc.exe is part of WannaCry, that means that your computer has been infected and you did not get rid of the ransomware fully.

When the infection happened, WannaDecryptor placed Mssecsvc.exe in the C:\Windows\ folder. When WannaCry infects a computer, it encrypts files and then launches a ransom note demanding victims to pay money to get files back. Researchers and security specialists did not and still do not recommend paying the ransom because you should not forget you are dealing with cyber criminals. This applies to all ransomware cases. Cyber crooks do not feel obligated to give you anything, they just want to get money. A much more reasonable decision would be to invest that money into reliable backup. Had users backed up their files somewhere, they could have just ignored the demands and terminated the ransomware. It is important that users delete Mssecsvc.exe and all other components of the ransomware because they are still malicious files on your computer, even if WannaDecryptor itself does not seem to be running on your computer.
