Is this an infection?

Exploit.343 is a heuristic threat that is detected by Symantec anti-virus. According to the company’s official website, it’s a detection for files that try to exploit the Microsoft Windows Shortcut “LNK” Files Automatic File Execution Vulnerability. It’s not necessarily harmful, Symantec claims that it may or may not be a threat. Some of those detected files could be malicious and the company asks that users submit those files to Symantec Security Response Team.

There are user reports that state that the antivirus program constantly detects this threat and fills the notification box with warning about it. What it detects may or may not be dangerous as heuristic analysis is not always reliable and could lead to a false positive. If you constantly are having issues with this possible threat, it would be a good idea to submit files to Symantec Security Response Team for further investigation. It would also be reasonable to obtain another anti-malware software and scan your computer to see if anything is detected.

Whether Exploit.343 is a real threat or not, you would not be able to identify it without anti-malware software. Computers do show certain signs when an infection occurs, such as a slow system or crashing programs, but not many users take note of them as they are simply unaware of the possible signs. This is why having anti-malware software is so important. If your security software provides real-time threat detection, you would be informed of a risk immediately after it enters your computer. It also important that the developers of that program update the program’s database regularly so that it can detect new threats. There are plenty of options out there and it is important that you choose the best available one to ensure that your computer is safe.
