Is this a serious infection?

Lockey Ransomware is a file-encrypting type of malware that can cause great damage to one’s system. It’s the kind of threat that would encrypt all of your important files and then would demand that you pay to get them back. Because in a lot of cases users do not get their files back, ransomware is considered to be one of the most dangerous pieces of malware.

Lockey Ransomware

Infection usually happens when users open malicious email attachments/links or if they download something from unsafe sources. If you find your files encrypted, we do not recommend paying the ransom. Hackers will not necessarily feel obligated to help you, even after you pay. You are dealing cyber crooks after all. Instead of complying with the demands, you should remove Lockey Ransomware. And if you had backup, you can recover your files from there but you first need to delete Lockey Ransomware.

Ransomware infection methods

Ransomware infections oftentimes come from users being careless when they use email. Hackers write up a sloppy letter and attach their ransomware as an attachment. When users open the attachment/link, whether because they don’t know any better or because they’re curious, the ransomware would enter the computer. This is why users need to inform themselves about how to spot malicious emails. Ransomware can also spread via unsafe downloads. You should avoid questionable sites and Torrents because they are a great way for ransomware to infect you. If you need something, use legitimate/official sources.

What happened to your files?

When ransomware enters a computer, it immediately starts encrypting files. You might not even notice until your can’t open them and they have a weird file extension added to them. You should then be able to locate a ransom note which would explain everything. As is usual with ransomware, you would be demanded to pay a certain amount of money for a decryptor. If you do not have any other option, you might consider paying a good idea but you should consider a few things first. First of all, you are dealing with cyber criminals who did not hesitate to encrypt your files. What’s stopping them from just taking your money and not helping you. And you would also be supporting their future projects by paying. Backup would have saved you a lot of trouble. You could just remove Lockey Ransomware and proceed to recover the data. If you do not have it, we suggest you invest money into that, instead of complying with the demands. This way, if you ever lose access to your files, you would not have trouble recovering them.

Lockey Ransomware removal

We do not really recommend you attempt manual Lockey Ransomware removal because it could be difficult, and you might damage your system. Instead, you should obtain anti-malware software, and have it delete Lockey Ransomware for you. Unfortunately, the tool will only erase Lockey Ransomware, it will not recover your files.
