Performance Optimizer is a potentially unwanted program (PUP), advertised as a system optimization tool. It claims to be able to boost your computer’s performance by deleting certain files and solving various errors. These kinds of programs (Speedy SystemCare, PC Speed UP, Power Speedup 2018) are quite popular among users but rarely do they actually noticeably improve performance. Some of them are outright taking advantage of gullible users and scaring them into buying the full program.

That is the case with Performance Optimizer. The program will claim that your computer has various performance issues and that it needs a good clean. However, in order to use the fixing/cleaning feature, you will need to purchase the full version of the program. If users were to take a closer look at the search results, they would see that the identified issues aren’t as serious as they were made out to be, or they might not exist at all. It goes without saying that purchasing such programs would be a waste of money. Instead, you should delete Performance Optimizer.

We should mention that Performance Optimizer is not malware, nor will it harm your computer. Most PUPs generally aren’t dangerous, and instead try to scam people. However, falling for a scam can easily be avoided if users did their research before buying anything. A simple search with Google would show that the program is far from reliable.

Besides the possibly fake results, another reason Performance Optimizer may be classified as a PUP is its installation methods. Just like many programs of this kind, it uses software bundling to install onto users’ computers without permission. Essentially, PUPs are added to freeware as extra offers, which can install alongside unless they are manually deselected. We will explain how to do that in the following section.

How do PUPs install

There is a chance that you installed the program yourself, thinking that it will somehow speed up your device. If that is the case, next time you install a program, you should be more careful and do a more in-depth research. If you don’t remember installing it, then it likely entered via the bundling method. Oftentimes, popular free programs have extra offers attached to them, and they are allowed to install alongside the program. It’s not difficult to prevent these unwanted installations, but because they are hidden during setup, users aren’t even aware of them being there. Those settings will both show you a list of what has been added and allow you to deselect everything. Some of the offers may look quite appealing but allowing them to install is not a good idea. Most of those offers will be useless, and you will want to get rid of them eventually. And it’s much easier to initially prevent them from installing than it is to later have to get rid of them.

Should you uninstall Performance Optimizer?

The program is advertised as a system optimizer which will supposedly fix performance issues and errors. It will scan your computer once it’s installed and inform you about various issues that are impacting your system. If you ignore the program, it will keep pestering you about the issues until you run out of patience. The results may show tens or even hundreds of issues, which will obviously alarm users. The program offers to fix the issues but you first have to buy the full program. These kinds of programs usually cost around $30 which may not seem like a lot of money at first but paying even that for a program that will probably do nothing is too much. If you checked the scan results more closely, you might find something surprising. The program is probably detecting things like old registry entries as serious issues when in reality they don’t actually affect your computer’s performance. Some of the issues detected might not even exist in the first place. Programs like this often use scare tactics to make users buy the full program, which is why they are often referred to as scareware.

If you researched system optimizers, you would find deferring opinions on whether they are actually useful. A lot of users believe that even legitimate system optimizers are completely useless and are not necessary. If you think otherwise, look into the programs very carefully before you install them. And you should stay away from tools that mess with the registry, as necessary files might be accidentally deleted. Microsoft also advises to not use such tools. Worst case scenario, you would end up needing to reinstall your Windows.

Step 1. Uninstall Performance Optimizer and related programs.

Remove Performance Optimizer from Windows 8

Right-click in the lower left corner of the screen. Once Quick Access Menu shows up, select Control Panel choose Programs and Features and select to Uninstall a software.

Uninstall Performance Optimizer from Windows 7

Click Start → Control Panel → Programs and Features → Uninstall a program.

Delete Performance Optimizer from Windows XP

Click Start → Settings → Control Panel. Locate and click → Add or Remove Programs.

Remove Performance Optimizer from Mac OS X

Click Go button at the top left of the screen and select Applications. Select applications folder and look for Performance Optimizer or any other suspicious software. Now right click on every of such entries and select Move to Trash, then right click the Trash icon and select Empty Trash.

Step 2. Delete Performance Optimizer from your browsers

• Internet Explorer
• Chrome
• Firefox
• Safari

Terminate the unwanted extensions from Internet Explorer

1. Tap the Gear icon and go to Manage Add-ons.
2. Pick Toolbars and Extensions and eliminate all suspicious entries (other than Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Oracle or Adobe)
3. Leave the window.

Change Internet Explorer homepage if it was changed by virus:

1. Tap the gear icon (menu) on the top right corner of your browser and click Internet Options.
2. In General Tab remove malicious URL and enter preferable domain name. Press Apply to save changes.

Reset your browser

1. Click the Gear icon and move to Internet Options.
2. Open the Advanced tab and press Reset.
3. Choose Delete personal settings and pick Reset one more time.
4. Tap Close and leave your browser.
5. If you were unable to reset your browsers, employ a reputable anti-malware and scan your entire computer with it.

Erase Performance Optimizer from Google Chrome

1. Access menu (top right corner of the window) and pick Settings.
2. Choose Extensions.
3. Eliminate the suspicious extensions from the list by clicking the Trash bin next to them.
4. If you are unsure which extensions to remove, you can disable them temporarily.

Reset Google Chrome homepage and default search engine if it was hijacker by virus

1. Press on menu icon and click Settings.
2. Look for the “Open a specific page” or “Set Pages” under “On start up” option and click on Set pages.
3. In another window remove malicious search sites and enter the one that you want to use as your homepage.
4. Under the Search section choose Manage Search engines. When in Search Engines..., remove malicious search websites. You should leave only Google or your preferred search name.
   

Reset your browser

1. If the browser still does not work the way you prefer, you can reset its settings.
2. Open menu and navigate to Settings.
3. Press Reset button at the end of the page.
4. Tap Reset button one more time in the confirmation box.
5. If you cannot reset the settings, purchase a legitimate anti-malware and scan your PC.

Remove Performance Optimizer from Mozilla Firefox

1. In the top right corner of the screen, press menu and choose Add-ons (or tap Ctrl+Shift+A simultaneously).
2. Move to Extensions and Add-ons list and uninstall all suspicious and unknown entries.

Change Mozilla Firefox homepage if it was changed by virus:

1. Tap on the menu (top right corner), choose Options.
2. On General tab delete malicious URL and enter preferable website or click Restore to default.
3. Press OK to save these changes.

Reset your browser

1. Open the menu and tap Help button.
2. Select Troubleshooting Information.
3. Press Refresh Firefox.
4. In the confirmation box, click Refresh Firefox once more.
5. If you are unable to reset Mozilla Firefox, scan your entire computer with a trustworthy anti-malware.

Uninstall Performance Optimizer from Safari (Mac OS X)

1. Access the menu.
2. Pick Preferences.
3. Go to the Extensions Tab.
4. Tap the Uninstall button next to the undesirable Performance Optimizer and get rid of all the other unknown entries as well. If you are unsure whether the extension is reliable or not, simply uncheck the Enable box in order to disable it temporarily.
5. Restart Safari.

Reset your browser

1. Tap the menu icon and choose Reset Safari.
2. Pick the options which you want to reset (often all of them are preselected) and press Reset.
3. If you cannot reset the browser, scan your whole PC with an authentic malware removal software.
