About this infection

Sweetpacks Toolbar is a browser hijacker that will make changes to your browser without permission. It can get into your computer uninvited, via freeware bundles, and will set its promoted site as your homepage and new tabs in order to be able to redirect you to sponsored sites. This is typical browser hijacker behavior, so if you’ve encountered one before, this shouldn’t surprise you. If you do not delete Sweetpacks Toolbar immediately, you might end up being redirected to those sites, and they are not always harmless. Hijackers aim to redirect you because more traffic brings more money for site owners, but they can also lead to malicious site, where you could pick up malware.

How do hijackers spread?

Browser hijackers are added as extra offers to freeware, and all you need to do to prevent them from installing is deselect them. However, a lot of users do not deselect them simply because they do not notice them. They are hidden in Advanced or Custom settings, and users usually opt for Default. So whenever you are installing a program, choose Advanced or Custom settings. You will see a list of added offers, and will be able to deselect them. You could have also picked it up willingly from some store, but that is much less likely. Nevertheless, whichever way you got it, remove Sweetpacks Toolbar.

Why uninstall Sweetpacks Toolbar?

You will definitely notice the infection because your browser’s settings will be changed, and you will have start.sweetpacks.com set as your homepage and new tabs. Your default search engine will also be changed to search.sweetpacks.com. Those changes may affect all popular browsers you have installed, including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. When you notice the changes, you may try to reverse them but the hijacker could prevent you from doing that. So you may be able unable to alter the settings until you first delete Sweetpacks Toolbar. The site you will be redirected to does not look reliable at all, it will promote a search engine, which will insert advertisement content into results so be careful if you choose to use it. Those sites will have little do with what you were looking for so you should be able to differentiate between legitimate and sponsored content. Do remember that some of those links could lead to malicious sites, where you could pick up malware. So it’s best if you avoid using the search engine in the first place. So just remove Sweetpacks Toolbar, seeing as it doesn’t really provide anything beneficial.
