Archive of Our Own (AO3), one of the internet’s largest fanfiction platforms, could remain unavailable for up to four weeks after its operators discovered evidence of a security incident. The organization responsible for the website is investigating the breach and has not ruled out the possibility that user account information was stolen.

The disruption began on October 29, 2026, when AO3 was taken offline for what was initially described as maintenance. The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), the nonprofit behind the platform, first estimated that the work would require at least 12 hours. However, the expected recovery period was subsequently extended to between two and four weeks.

In an October 30 statement, OTW confirmed that its team had identified evidence of a security incident. The organization did not disclose how the intrusion occurred or identify the party responsible, explaining that investigators were still assessing its scope.

Although OTW currently considers the theft of its user database unlikely, it acknowledged that unauthorized access to account information remains a possibility. The database may contain usernames, email addresses, IP addresses, and hashed passwords.

The organization emphasized that passwords are stored using industry-standard hashing techniques rather than in readable form. Nevertheless, it warned that weak or reused passwords could still be vulnerable if the database had been obtained by attackers. Users were advised to change passwords on other services where they had reused their AO3 credentials.

OTW also confirmed that no content had been deleted during the incident. Stories, bookmarks, kudos and other contributions remain intact, according to the organization. AO3 does not collect users’ real names, while donor information is maintained separately and was not exposed.

The shutdown affects a platform hosting millions of fan-created stories based on books, films, television series, and other media. AO3 is operated primarily by volunteers and funded through donations, making it an important independent resource for online fanfiction communities.

The organization is considering restoring limited access before the investigation and recovery process are completed. Such a reopening could provide read-only access or leave certain features unavailable, with additional temporary shutdowns possible while repairs continue.

OTW has not announced a confirmed reopening date. It expects the website to remain offline for at least two weeks and potentially as long as four weeks, with further updates to be published through its official communication channels.
