What is Osiris virus?

Osiris virus refers to file-encrypting ransomware from the Locky ransomware family. It’s more or less identical to other ransomware, including .thor and .odin. Once this malware gets into your computer, it will encrypt your files and make them unopenable. The ransomware targets all personal files, including photos, images, videos, documents, etc. It may be difficult to tell which files have been encrypted because their names will be changed.

Users can usually identify which ransomware they’re dealing with by the extensions added to encrypted files. Osiris ransomware is known as such because it adds .osiris. Before .osiris, it also adds 24 random characters as well. For example, an encrypted image.jpg file would become [8 random characters]-[4 random characters]-[4 random characters]-[8 random characters].osiris. Unless you use a decryptor on these files, you will not be able to open any of them.

Once the ransomware is finished with file encryption, it will show a ransom note on the desktop. The note explains what happened to your files and explains that to recover them, you’d need to pay a ransom. Victims are assigned a custom ID that would help the cyber criminals identify who the victim is and theoretically send the correct decryptor as they are different for each victim. However, we should caution you that paying the ransom does not guarantee a decryptor considering you are dealing with cybercriminals.

The best way to recover files is from backup. If you have copies of your files in a backup, you should have no trouble recovering files. However, you first need to make sure to fully delete Osiris virus from your computer. Only when the ransomware is fully gone from your device is it safe to access your backup.

How does ransomware infect computers?

Ransomware is usually distributed via methods like emails, torrents, ads, etc. If you have bad online habits, you’re much more likely to pick up malware because of your recklessness when online. If you take the time to develop better habits, you will be able to avoid many malware infections in the future.

Email attachments are one of the most common ways users infect their computers with malware. Opening a malicious attachment is enough to trigger the infection, and in this case, allow the ransomware to initiate. It’s quite a low effort distribution method for cybercriminals because they can easily purchase email addresses from hacker forums and write a semi-convincing email to attach the malicious file to. Fortunately for users, these emails are usually quite easy to recognize. The most obvious sign is grammar and spelling mistakes in emails whose senders claim to be from legitimate companies. It goes without saying that mistakes in official correspondence appear unprofessional so companies will be very careful to avoid them. Furthermore, malicious emails often address users with generic terms like User, Member, Customer, etc., despite saying that users use their services. If a company whose services you use sends you an email, you will always be addressed by your name, or the name you have given the company. But while most malicious spam campaigns will very obvious, some may be more sophisticated, which is why it’s recommended to scan all unsolicited email attachments with anti-virus software or VirusTotal before opening them.

Torrents are also a common way users pick up malicious infections. You probably already know this but torrent sites are notoriously badly regulated. This allows malicious actors to easily upload malicious content in torrents for popular movies, TV series, video games, software, etc. The more popular the content is, the more likely its torrents will have malware in them. So if you use torrents to download copyrighted content, you’re not only essentially stealing but also endangering your computer.

Osiris virus removal

Because ransomware is a very complex malware infection, it’s not a good idea to try to remove Osiris virus manually. Unless you know exactly what to do, you may accidentally cause additional damage. Furthermore, incorrectly removing the ransomware could allow it to recover later on. And if the ransomware is still present when you connect to your backup, your backed-up files would become encrypted as well.

If you do not have a backup, your only option may be to wait for a free decryptor to be released. However, because that may be a while, back up your encrypted files and wait for a free decryptor. You can check NoMoreRansom for free decryptors.
