How to reset Internet Explorer?

Resetting Internet Explorer should solve all your adware and browser hijacker related issues. But it will also delete all stored data, including your history, bookmarks, etc. The process is irreversible.

Method 1. Using Reset Settings

1. Open Internet Explorer. Press on Tools located at the top right corner. Select Internet Options.

2. Press on Advanced Tab. A Reset option will be located near the bottom. Select that. (Alternately, if you are using an older version of the browser, press Restore Default).

3. Reset Internet Explorer Settings window will open. Check the box where is says Delete personal settings. Click Reset.

4. Click Close and press OK.

Method 2. Quick access to Reset settings

1. Close the Internet Explorer browser. Click the Start button. Select Run.

2. Type in inetcpl.cpl. Press OK.

3. Select Advanced in the Internet Properties, and press Reset.

4. Reset Internet Explorer Settings window will open. Check the box where is says Delete personal settings. Click Reset.

5. Click Close and press OK.

Method 3. Reset Internet Explorer via Command Prompt

1.  Access Command Prompt (Admin).

Windows 10:

Press Win + X and select Command Prompt (Admin). Alternatively, type cmd is the search bar. Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.

Windows 8/8.1:

Apps -> Windows System -> Command Prompt.

Windows 7, Vista, XP:

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt

2. Press Yes when User Account Control opens.

3. Type in SFC /SCANNOW in the command line. Press Enter.

4. You will see information about fixed issues.

Method 4. Reset Internet Explorer via Registry Editor

1.  Type Run in the menu and double click on it.

2. In the bar, insert regedit. Press Enter. Press Yes when User Account Control appears.

3. In Registry Editor, locate [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer] and remove it. When the Confirm Key Delete window appears, press Yes.

4. Remove all Internet Explorer related files in AppData or Application Data, as well as in Local Settings.

Method 5. Reinstall Internet Explorer

Reinstall the browser only if the other methods have not solved the problem.

1. Control Panel -> Program (Add/Remove Programs).

2. Located on the left side, click on Turn Windows features on or off.

3. In Windows Features, uncheck Internet Explorer.

4.  Press Yes when the warning appears and then OK.

5. Now that Internet Explorer is removed, you will need to install it again. You can do that by either downloading it from the official site using a different browser or by following the instructions below.
