About this hijacker

ChromeSearch.Online is a website promoted by a browser hijacker, which you might find set as your homepage/new tab. It seems to advertise itself as an official Google Chrome homepage, as evident from the clear ‘Chrome Search’ written on the site. chrome-search-online

However, there is no such thing, and this is nothing more than a browser hijacker. The hijacker is not exactly a malicious infection, more of an annoyance than anything serious, but it could still cause some trouble. For one, hijackers could redirect users to sponsored websites. They are employed by website owners who want to have their website traffic boosted, which would earn them more revenue. So you could be redirected to random websites just so owners could make more money. Not all of the sites will be secure, and some might lead to possibly malicious websites.

The hijacker probably got into your computer via freeware bundles. It was probably attached to freeware as an extra offer, and you failed to deselect it. This happens quite often because users are quite inattentive when installing programs. You won’t obtain a serious infection this way, but dealing with the ones that you can, will still be troublesome. So unless you want to be stuck having to delete ChromeSearch.Online or similar infections, make sure you prevent their installation in the first place. We will explain how to do that further on in the article.

Should you remove ChromeSearch.Online?

The hijackers are pretty easy to notice, as they change browser’s settings so that you have the website set as your homepage/new tabs. This will primarily affect your Google Chrome browser. These browser changes are not reversible until you get rid of the infection. Until then, you are stuck with the website. It tries to appear as the official Chrome homepage so users might not question it when they notice it loading. It will offer the same links to services as Google, and will host a search engine, which will generate results via Google as well. It shouldn’t be able to redirect you, unlike most hijackers, but it’s probably aiming to get revenue from ads hosted in the results.

The search engine hosted on the site is advertised as one that respects your privacy, and one would assume that means no information is collected when users use it, but that is not the case. If you read the Privacy Policy, you will see that it does gather information about you and your searches. It would even host your personal information. It could then be shared with unrated third-parties. Besides, Google has its own Privacy Policy, which you should familiarize yourself with if you intend to use the search engine, and will definitely collect information. If you are not comfortable with information about you being collected, you should definitely not use it. And in any case, why would you use a questionable third-party website to search via Google, when you can go there directly.

How does it spread?

You will have to be more careful about how you install programs, if you want to avoid infections in the future. A lot of free software come together with additional offers, which you need to deselect. Otherwise, they install. All you need to do is pay attention to the installation process, and pick Advanced or Custom settings. Those settings will make added offers visible, and you will be able to deselect all of them. All that would need to be done is uncheck the boxes. After you deselect all of the offers, you can continue installing the program.
