What is IDP.Generic Malware

IDP.Generic Malware can either be a false positive or legitimate malware detection. This detection name is quite generic and can be used to identify all kinds of potentially dangerous threats. However, in most cases, IDP.Generic detections are false positives. False positives are detections that anti-virus programs make by mistake by identifying harmless files as threats. It can happen for a variety of reasons, which is why is false positives are quite common. Commonly, game files are detected as IDP.Generic, and when the anti-virus quarantines them, the games are unable to launch. So even when the detections are false positive, it can get quite frustrating.

IDP-Generic Malware

The IDP.Generic Malware detection is common when using Avast anti-virus software. However, just because it’s often a false positive, you should not immediately disregard it as such if Avast detects it on your computer. Instead, you should check which exact file is detected and where it’s located. Keep in mind that it’s not uncommon for malware to be disguised as legitimate files in order to avoid detection. If you suspect a false positive, make sure the detected file is located where it’s supposed to be. If it’s placed somewhere it shouldn’t be, you may be dealing with an actual malware infection.

The easiest way to tell whether you are dealing with a false positive is to scan your computer with a different anti-virus program that does not use Avast’s malware database. If nothing is detected, the IDP.Generic Malware detection is likely a false positive.

IDP.Generic Malware removal

Because it is possible that you are dealing with a false positive, we would recommend scanning the computer with several different anti-malware programs. Avast is known to show this false positive so use other anti-virus programs for the scan. If other security programs do not show anything, you are likely dealing with a false positive. If Avast continues to show you notifications about detecting IDP.Generic Malware, try whitelisting the detected file. But because this is an issue with Avast, or whichever anti-virus program you are using, you will have to wait until the issue is solved on their end.
