What is Serpent?

Serpent is a file-encrypting virus, known as ransomware. These kinds of viruses usually spread via malicious email attachments. All you have to do is open the wrong attachment and the virus enters your computer. It will encrypt your files using complex algorithms and will demand that you pay to get them back. We cannot recommend paying the ransom as many ransomware developers just take your money and leave files encrypted. You might end up losing not only your files but also your money. Unfortunately, the only way to get your files is via backup. If you have backed up all your important files prior to infection, you can access them after you remove Serpent. It is important that you first delete Serpent and only then connect your backup, as otherwise, those files could become encrypted too.

How does Serpent spread?

Just like any other ransomware, Serpent spreads via spam email attachments. It is rather peculiar that these relatively complex viruses use such a simple way to spread. Despite many warnings not to, many users still open every email attachment they get, thus infect their computers with ransomware. Never open email attachments from users you do not know without first making sure it is safe to do so. Double check the sender and the contents of the email for any signs of ransomware, and only when you are 100% sure it is safe, open the attachment. If you continue to be careless, you will eventually end up with ransomware.

What does Serpent do?

Just like all file-encrypting ransomware viruses, Serpentwill encrypt your files and attach the .serpent extension to them. So you will easily know which files have been affected. You will then discover two identical ransom messages in all folders that have encrypted files. The note is in Danish, so we can presume that the virus primarily targets Danish-speaking users. It will inform you that your files have been encrypted and that you need to pay to restore them. The crooks behind Serpent are asking for 0.75 Bitcoin (around $800 at the time of writing). If the ransom is not paid within 7 days, the price for the decryptor will rise to 2.25 (currently around $2400). They provide all the necessary information and paying might seem like the most obvious option but we recommend you ignore the demands and remove Serpent. Even if you pay, there is high chance that your files will stay encrypted as ransomware developers do not feel obligated to decrypt your files. This is why backup is essential. had you had backup, you could just access your files after you delete Serpent.

Serpent removal

It would be difficult to erase Serpent manually, as the virus itself is quite complex. Which is why we do not recommend manual Serpent removal. What we do suggest is obtaining anti-malware software. It should be able to terminate Serpent without issue. Unfortunately, your files will remain encrypted even after you eliminate Serpent.
