About this ransomware

Tron ransomware is file-encrypting type of malware that will lock your files and demand that you pay to get a decryptor. Ransomware is one of the most dangerous malware out there, and infection could have dire consequences as files aren’t always recoverable. Once it gets inside, it will use a powerful encryption algorithm to lock your files, which will make them unopenable. You will then be demanded to pay for a decryptor, which will supposedly recover your files. Trusting cybercrooks to keep their word and recover your files is not a good idea, as it’s doubtful they will feel the need to help you. Instead, they could just take your money and you’d end up not only losing your files but your money as well. A much better idea would be to use part of that money to buy backup so that you can store important files there and they wouldn’t be in danger. If you had backup before the infection tool place, you can safely access your files after you delete Tron ransomware.

If you’re wondering how you managed to infect your computer, it’s likely that you opened some kind of malicious email attachment, or downloaded a fake software update. We will explain the methods and how to avoid ransomware in the following paragraphs, but if you are only interested in how to get rid of the infection, proceed to the last section.

What happened to your files

As soon as you launched the infected file, it started checking your computer for certain files and encrypting them. It needs to hold leverage over you so it will target all files you may hold important, such as photos, documents, videos, etc. Once they are encrypted, you will notice that they have the .tron extension added to them. It is believed that the crooks behind this ransomware are from Russia, as the ransomware self-destructs if you become infected when located in Russia.

Once you notice that your files have been encrypted, you will also see a ransom note. The note will explain that your files have been encrypted and that you need to pay a ransom. You are given 10 days to pay 0.05 Bitcoin, which equals to $400 or €320. Afterwards, you are supposed to email them using supportjron@gmail.com with the ID they have given you. Contacting the crooks is not a good idea. You are dealing with cyber criminals who will not feel obligated to help you in any way after they get their payment. You’re more likely to have your money taken rather than get your files restored. We highly recommend you do not pay, and instead get backup. In addition, ransomware researches can sometimes crack the ransomware, thus are able to release a free decryption tool. So you should look into that first.

And again, if you have backup, first make sure you remove Tron ransomware, and only then recover files.

How did it infect your computer?

There are a couple of ways ransomware could have entered your computer. Spam email campaigns are particularly popular among ransomware distributors. They compose a legitimate-looking email, usually pretending to be from some known company and try to pressure you that you need to open the attachment, which is contaminated with ransomware. The email may claim it’s some kind of important document, a receipt for a purchase or some tax related form. And when users see familiar company/organization names they tend to lower their guard, thus may not even think twice about opening attachments. There are a couple of things to look out for when dealing with emails with attachments. Look for grammar mistakes and pressure to open the attachment. The sender not using your name could also be sign that it’s spam and you should stay away from it. If, for example, Amazon emails you, they will always use your name, or the name you have given them when you registered. Most of the ransomware carrying spam emails will use general greetings like Dear Customer/Member/User as they do not have your name.

You could have also picked it up when installing fake software updates. You should only download updates from official sources, and certainly not from ads that appear as you browse. More often than not, they will lead to something malicious.

Tron ransomware removal

If the ransomware still remains on your computer, you will need to get anti-malware software to get rid of it. We don’t recommend you manually uninstall Tron ransomware because you could end up damaging your computer. Thus, you need to use anti-malware.
