After downloading Microsoft Safety Scanner, you may notice msert.exe running on your computer. It’s not a malicious file and is part of the program that belongs to Microsoft Windows.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a scan tool that is designed to find and erase malware from the computer. It’s somewhat similar to anti-virus, though it does not replace it. The tool does not come pre-installed, and needs to be manually downloaded and operated. It is usable for 10 days after downloading. The process msert.exe will appear when you install the tool. It suddenly appearing in Task Manager may alarm you, but there is no need to be concerned. You can delete msert.exe after you no longer need to use the Microsoft Safety Scanner. Removing it while you’re still using the tool will cause problems as that will remove the program from your computer.
