ExplorationSprint adware is a minor infection from the AdLoad malware family. It’s not particularly dangerous as its main purpose is to spam you with ads, not directly damage your computer. However, that does not mean it’s harmless either because some of the ads it shows you could expose you to dangerous content. If you notice it on your Mac, we recommend you remove ExplorationSprint adware as soon as possible.

ExplorationSprint adware

Infections like ExplorationSprint adware tend to be very obvious, especially ones from the Adload malware family. It’s clearly visible among installed apps if you open your Applications folder in Finder. But the first clue would be the nonstop ads being spammed at you, on every website you visit.

Adware ads could expose you to potentially dangerous content, in addition to being very annoying. The adware should not directly damage your computer but the ads it spams you with will not necessarily be harmless. It’s quite common for adware to show fake virus alerts, which claim that users’ computers are infected with serious malware that’s stealing files. To supposedly remove the malware, the fake alerts prompt users to call the displayed numbers. But if users were to call, they would be connected to scammers pretending to work for either Microsoft or Apple. Scammers would request remote access to the computer, and if granted, they would put on a show of fixing it. Scammers would then demand at least a couple of hundred dollars for these services they have supposedly provided. However, users neither needed them nor actually received those services.

Lastly, we should mention that adware is known to collect information related to browsing. ExplorationSprint adware will track what sites you visit, what you search for, and your IP address. It’s not uncommon for this information to also be shared with other parties, usually for advertising purposes. There’s really no reason to put up with this kind of behavior considering the adware has no useful features.

The adware has no use to you and will only cause issues. The sooner you remove ExplorationSprint adware, the sooner you will go back to ad-free browsing.

How did ExplorationSprint adware install on my computer?

Users’ bad installation habits are why infections like adware and browser hijackers are so common as developers take full advantage of the fact that users don’t pay attention when they’re installing programs. They use what’s known as software bundling to attach infections to freeware as extra offers. These extra offers are authorized to be installed alongside if users do not manually deselect them. It’s considered to be a rather questionable installation method. It should be mentioned that programs using this installation method are usually detected as potential threats by anti-virus vendors.

The added offers are optional so you can and should deselect them. The problem is that they are hidden, which means many users are not even aware of the offers. If you want to make them visible, you need to choose Advanced or Custom settings during program installation. The installation window usually recommends using Default (Basic) settings but those settings will hide the offers, authorizing them to install. However, when using Advanced settings, you will be able to review what has been added as well as deselect everything.

You should always deselect all extra offers that come attached to programs you install. Legitimate programs will not use software bundling to install and the programs that do should not be permitted to install.

Users also install adware because they do not do any research prior to installing programs. A lot of adware and browser hijackers are disguised as useful-looking programs but even a quick search with Google prior to installing something can help determine whether it’s safe to install and use.
