What is Google Prize virus

Google Prize virus refers to an adware program that shows bogus Google notifications that claim users have won prizes. This is a very typical scam but it seems it still is able to lure people in if it’s still appearing. The scam is harmless as long you do not engage with it. However, users who do interact with it end up revealing personal information and paying small sums of money.

If it wasn’t so overused, it would be a rather clever scam. The way the scam works is pretty simple, users get randomly redirected to a website that displays a notification about a contest which the user has unknowingly won. The user is asked to answer a few questions about their use of Google and then they are informed that they have won a computer, an iPhone, a Samsung smartphone, some kind of tablet or any other new device. However, to receive the price, users need to reveal their personal information. That information and/or money is the main goal of these scams.

The pop-ups and redirects don’t appear just because. If you are seeing them, you either were visiting a shady website that redirected you, or your computer is infected with adware. If it’s adware, you’ll need to get rid of it to remove Google Prize virus.

What is causing the pop-ups and redirects?

If you were visiting a certain site that is known to host questionable ads, it may have been the site that redirected you. As long as you avoid visiting those sites or at least have adblock enabled, you shouldn’t get redirected again.

However, if you are redirected regularly or at least a couple of times, your computer may be infected with adware. Adware is a relatively minor computer infection that comes together with free programs. If you have recently installed freeware, it’s possible that the adware was attached to it.

A lot of free programs come together with these free offers and while they are set to install alongside automatically, they are optional. When you install freeware, opt for Advanced (Custom) settings instead of Default when given the option. Unlike Default, Advanced settings will display all added offers and allow you to deselect all of them. Simply unchecking their boxes is enough to prevent them from installing. Do this with all programs you install because otherwise your computer will be full of rubbish programs that interrupt your regular use.

Will you actually receive a prize?

If it hasn’t been clear yet, all of these giveaways, including Google Prize, are scams. They try to trick users into revealing personal information and pay certain sums of money.

There are slightly different scams using Google’s name to trick users but they all essentially the same. They first congratulate the user for being a lucky visitor, user of Chrome, or loyal Google user and then offer various prizes. The prizes are either gift cards or newest models of some kind of device, like an iPhone or a Samsung smartphone. Some scams ask users to answer a couple of questions related to their use of Google. In the end, they say that all users need to do now is fill in a form and receive the prize. Users are asked to provide their full names, home addresses, emails, phone numbers and all kinds of other information, supposedly so that the prize could be delivered. In reality, scammers are trying to get that information so that they could scam users in the future. Some scams also ask users to pay a small fee in order to receive the prize. So in short, these scams are either trying to get your information, your money or both.

Just to be clear, these giveaways are never legitimate. Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc., do not host such giveaways, and if they did, they would announce them via official channels, not a random ad.

Step 1. Uninstall Google Prize virus and related programs.

Remove Google Prize virus from Windows 8

Right-click in the lower left corner of the screen. Once Quick Access Menu shows up, select Control Panel choose Programs and Features and select to Uninstall a software.

Uninstall Google Prize virus from Windows 7

Click Start → Control Panel → Programs and Features → Uninstall a program.

Delete Google Prize virus from Windows XP

Change Internet Explorer homepage if it was changed by virus:

1. Tap the gear icon (menu) on the top right corner of your browser and click Internet Options.
2. In General Tab remove malicious URL and enter preferable domain name. Press Apply to save changes.

Reset your browser

1. Click the Gear icon and move to Internet Options.
2. Open the Advanced tab and press Reset.
3. Choose Delete personal settings and pick Reset one more time.
4. Tap Close and leave your browser.
5. If you were unable to reset your browsers, employ a reputable anti-malware and scan your entire computer with it.

Erase Google Prize virus from Google Chrome

1. Access menu (top right corner of the window) and pick Settings.
2. Choose Extensions.
3. Eliminate the suspicious extensions from the list by clicking the Trash bin next to them.
4. If you are unsure which extensions to remove, you can disable them temporarily.

Reset Google Chrome homepage and default search engine if it was hijacker by virus

1. Press on menu icon and click Settings.

Reset your browser

1. If the browser still does not work the way you prefer, you can reset its settings.
2. Open menu and navigate to Settings.
3. Press Reset button at the end of the page.
4. Tap Reset button one more time in the confirmation box.
5. If you cannot reset the settings, purchase a legitimate anti-malware and scan your PC.

Remove Google Prize virus from Mozilla Firefox

1. In the top right corner of the screen, press menu and choose Add-ons (or tap Ctrl+Shift+A simultaneously).
2. Move to Extensions and Add-ons list and uninstall all suspicious and unknown entries.

Change Mozilla Firefox homepage if it was changed by virus:

1. Tap on the menu (top right corner), choose Options.
2. On General tab delete malicious URL and enter preferable website or click Restore to default.
3. Press OK to save these changes.

Reset your browser

1. Open the menu and tap Help button.
2. Select Troubleshooting Information.
3. Press Refresh Firefox.
4. In the confirmation box, click Refresh Firefox once more.
5. If you are unable to reset Mozilla Firefox, scan your entire computer with a trustworthy anti-malware.

Uninstall Google Prize virus from Safari (Mac OS X)

1. Access the menu.
2. Pick Preferences.
3. Go to the Extensions Tab.
