About CleanMyPC

CleanMyPC is a potentially unwanted program (PUP), advertised as a system optimization tool. Unreliable system optimizers are very common, we regularly post about a new one appearing (Power Speedup 2018, Power PC Care 2018, PC Health Advisor). They aren’t exactly dangerous programs and they aren’t classified as a malicious, but they are still potentially unwanted. The reason such programs are classified as PUPs is because they install without permission, and show false results in order to alarm users enough to buy the full programs. In many cases, these programs use the bundling method, which essentially means that they are attached to legitimate freeware as extra offers. Those offers are authorized to install alongside, unless users manually deselect them during installation. This is a rather sneaky method because in many cases, users are not even aware of there being anything attached. CleanMyPC

Programs like CleanMyPC are advertised as tools that will speed up your device and improve its performance by fixing various issues. However, in order to get more sales, such programs try to deceive the user by displaying either non-existent issues, or making minor ones seem severe. The programs offer to solve those issues but the user first needs to purchase the full versions. When users see a list of hundreds of issues, they become alarmed and proceed to purchase the programs.

In general, many tech-savvy users agree that a system optimizer is not necessary in order to keep a computer functioning properly. Those programs promise to speed up a computer by erasing a few files, when in reality it would not have any affect. They also mess with the registry, which can have serious consequences. While CleanMyPC is not a dangerous program, we do suggest you consider carefully whether your computer would actually benefit from it. If not, you should remove CleanMyPC.

How do PUPs spread?

Potentially unwanted programs often spread via the bundling method, which is essentially adding extra items to programs. In many cases, free programs come bundled with adware, browser hijackers and various kinds of PUPs. They are set to install alongside the program, unless users manually prevent them from doing so. In order to be able to do that, users need to opt for Advanced (Custom) settings when installing programs. Those settings will make all added offers visible, and users will have the option of deselecting them. It’s doubtful any of the offers will be of any use, so it’s recommended to deselect all offers.

Since many free programs come with bundled offers, you should always pay attention when installing software, even when you get it from reliable sources. You won’t end up with serious malware via this method, but the adware, browser hijackers and PUPs you can get will be annoying to get rid of.

Should you uninstall CleanMyPC?

First of all, CleanMyPC is not a malicious program, and it does not behave like one. However, we would research it carefully before making a purchase. Keep in mind that programs like this often try to deceive users into buying the full versions. Fraudulent system optimizers show fake scan results, where issues are either made up or are completely minor but made to seem serious. Oftentimes, in order to alarm users, the programs claim that there are hundreds of issues on the computer, which are supposedly both negatively affecting the computer’s performance and possibly harming it. When users try to fix those identified issues, they are requested to buy the full version, which is usually around $30. The thing about these kinds of programs is that they often classify things like old registry entries as serious issues. Those entries may be leftovers from uninstalled programs, and they really don’t have any noticeable affect on the computer, despite what many registry cleaners claim. So if CleanMyPC detects registry entries as serious issues, users would be paying $30 for nothing, as a registry clean up will have no positive affect on the system.

On the contrary, some registry cleaners could even harm a device. If the wrong entry is deleted, it could result in programs not functioning properly, or not openable at all. Worst case scenario, users would need to reinstall their system. This is one of the reasons why even Microsoft advises against using such programs.

If you believe that your computer could benefit from using such a program, you can find better options for free. However, do be aware that system optimizers might delete files that are necessary, thus causing more trouble than they’re worth. In general, many users believe that Windows computers are fully capable of managing themselves, thus a cleaner is not necessary.
