About Taboola Virus

Taboola Virus is what users call the annoying Taboola advertisements that appear on various websites. Taboola is a legitimate service that provides content and advertisements to various pages, like NBC and MSN. The ads usually appear at the bottom or at the side, and provide links to recommended content that the service thinks users would enjoy. Those ads are not the result of a computer infection like adware, and are hosted on the website itself. Taboola Virus

Basically, if you are seeing loads of those ads, that does not mean you have an infection on your computer, it just means the site you are visiting has chosen to use Taboola services. The content you are offered usually includes clickbait articles, which lead to external websites. It goes without saying that you need to be careful about clicking on such content, even if it’s hosted on a trustworthy website. Websites trust ad providers to display safe content, but that is not always the case. So click on all advertisement content with caution as you do not know where you will be led to. A click on the wrong ad could redirect to scams, questionable or even malicious content. Back in 2017, there was an instance where Taboola was used by scammers to lead users to a tech-support scams, which aim to fool users into thinking their computers have been infected with malware.

Since the ads are not caused by adware, you do not need to remove Taboola Virus. If you are annoyed by the advertisements, you’ll just have to avoid the sites that host them.

Why are you seeing the advertisements?

The amount of advertisements one sees when browsing the Internet can sometimes give the impression that they are brought about by adware. Adware is a program that installs on a computer unnoticed and proceeds to generate revenue by displaying adverts. The ads can appear when browsing all kinds of websites, and could even lead to scams and malicious content. Adware usually installs attached to freeware, which is why many users might not notice it installing. However, Taboola ads are not caused by adware. You are seeing them on websites because their owners have decided to use Taboola services. There’s not much you can do to stop the ads from appearing, besides not visiting the sites that host them.

Are Taboola ads safe?

Taboola ads are the ‘recommended articles’ you see at the bottom or side on various news websites. They use clickbait headlines that make the user curious enough to click on them. The way the ad content is displayed also makes it seem as if it belongs to the site on which it’s hosted. So if you are on a news website, the ‘recommended articles’ may appear to be written by the news site at first glace. Trusting the site and tempted by the clickbait titles, users would click on them. However, like with any kind of online content, you need to be careful about which ads you press on.

Back in September 2017, anti-malware software Malwarebyte’s researchers noticed that Taboola promoted content on MSN.com led users to malvertising. MSN.com is a Microsoft-owned website, which had signed a deal with Taboola in 2016. Links to malicious advertisements would be concealed as sensational articles, which if pressed would lead to a page that warns that the user’s computer has crashed, and tech-support needs to be contacted. A phone number for tech-support would be displayed on the warning. Obviously, it was nothing more than a tech-support scam but the warning appeared over and over again, which made it seem more legitimate. Users who called the tech-support number were connected to scammers who claimed that they need to connect to the users’ computers remotely and install ‘security software’. By the end of the call, the user would be asked to pay a couple of hundred dollars for the supposed tech-support. Scammers had used Taboola to host their malicious ads on legitimate and trusted websites, and Taboola perhaps did not check what kind of content they were promoting. This incident certainly does not make Taboola very trustworthy, so always be on guard when interacting with its promoted content and ads.

Taboola Virus removal

Like we said before, you do not have to delete Taboola Virus as it’s not on your computer. Its ads are hosted on websites, so if you want to not see Taboola ads, do not visit sites that host them.
