About TV Guru Toolbar

TV Guru Toolbar  is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and a browser hijacker, advertised as an extension that allows users to watch television. It was developed by a known PUP developer Mindspark Interactive Network, who are responsible for such dubious extensions as FindMeFreebies, CouponXplorer and MyVideoTab. It’s not a serious threat, and the reason it’s referred to as potentially unwanted is because some users might choose to use it. It will not harm the computer but keeping it is still not recommended because hijackers aim to redirect users to sponsored websites. Those websites are not necessarily safe as they are not checked, which means that they could expose the user to dangerous content. If you are redirected, you could be led to a scam or even malware, so hijackers are best avoided. TV Guru Toolbar

If you install one unknowingly, which happens via the bundling method, you will notice immediately as it carries out some quite evident changes. Your browser’s settings will be changed, and your homepage will be set to a site promoted by the hijacker. You will be encouraged to use the search engine displayed in your home site, which would be inserting sponsored links into the results. You would be taken to all kinds of websites, some of which could be malicious. Even though browser hijackers claim to offer useful features, more often than not they are pretty useless. This particular extension offers you to watch TV by providing a couple of links, but it’s nothing you cannot find by yourself. And in reality, it’s likely just trying to generate traffic for certain websites so that owners can get revenue. Thus, we would recommend you delete TV Guru Toolbar.

How do hijackers install?

Often, these kinds of extensions are available on various download sites, as well as on their official pages. However, PUP also spread via the bundling method, which is basically attaching the PUPs to popular freeware. When users install said freeware, they unknowingly install the PUPs attached to them as well. The attached items are hidden during installation, which is why users generally do not notice them. If you want to make the visible, you need to use Advanced (Custom) settings when installing freeware. Those settings will not only show what has been attached to the program, but will also allow you to deselect all the extra offers. There may be more than one offer attached, and we would suggest deselecting all of them. Otherwise, you computer will quickly be filled with junk programs. And since a lot of freeware comes with added offers, this is something you should do every time you install freeware.

Should you remove TV Guru Toolbar?

Since it’s not a malicious program nor is it a virus, whether you keep the extension is your decision to make. However, there is little reason why you would wish to keep it. If you do not recall installing it, there is no reason why you should put up with the changes it has performed. And until you remove the hijacker, you will be unable to undo the changes. Your browser (whether you are using Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox) will have the homepage and new tabs set to hp.myway.com. The website does not look anything out of the ordinary, but you will notice it loading instead of your set homepage. It has a toolbar on it that supposedly allows users to watch television, as well as links to popular sites (Facebook, YouTube, Amazon, Instagram, Yahoo, etc.). The provided search engine says “enhanced by Google”, which essentially means that results will contain sponsored links. If you do end up using the search engine, be careful about what you click on because you could be led to dangerous sites. The sites will have little to do with what you were searching for, so you will not miss out on anything by pressing the on those links. If you accidentally do press on one and are led to anything even remotely dubious, close the window immediately. You could be led to some kind of scam, or exposed to malware. This is one of the reasons why hijackers are recommended to be uninstalled, even if they are not malicious themselves.

If you are curious about the data collected by the hijacker, read the Privacy Policy. This is something you should do with every new site and extension you start using. The Privacy Policy provides information about what kind of data is recorded about you, for what purposes it is used and whether it’s shared with third-parties. Check whether any kind of personal information is collected, as no dubious extension should have access to that.
