Is Mac Tonic a serious threat?
Mac Tonic is potentially unwanted program (PUP) that pretends to be a legitimate anti-virus and system optimizer. It has been noticed that recently the program started spreading quite widely on Mac computers, installing on many systems without permission. Some users may download it willingly but it’s more commonly encountered bundled with other software. So the bundling method would explain why the program launched on your computer out of the blue.
It’s not exactly a malicious program, though it will be of no use to you. It appears to work as anti-virus and system optimization program, and it scans your computer for threats and things that may be wrong. Should you remove Mac Tonic?
Programs like this one use the bundling method to install unnoticed. They come attached to other programs as extra offers, and unless you deselect it, they will install alongside. If you look at the results more closely, you will notice that the issues might not even exist. Of it could simply be showing old registry entries as severe issues. Just like many programs of this kind, this PUP is likely trying to alarm you enough to buy the full program. If you press ‘Clean Now’, you will be asked to buy the full program, which is currently offered at €29.95. Seeing as the shown issues might not even exist, it’s certainly not worth paying money to fix them.
