What is MFResident.exe

MFResident.exe is an executable file that belongs to iMyFone, a product that has many features, including recovering lost data and fixing device issues. The tool belongs to Shenzhen iMyFone Technology Co., which appears to be a legitimate company. However, users have recently started reporting that they are getting pop-up alerts on their computers warning them that MFResident.exe wants to make changes to their devices.

The legitimate file can be found at the following location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\iMyFone\Components\Resident. If this is the location of the MFResident.exe file on your computer, you are dealing with a legitimate file that does belong to iMyFone. However, if you find it somewhere else, it could be malware. To check MFResident.exe’s location, open your Task Manager, find and right-click on MFResident.exe, and click Properties. A window will pop up with detailed information about the process. You will find the location there.

It should be mentioned that malware can be disguised to look like legitimate processes to avoid detection by users. Even if users notice a suspicious file or process, when they use a search engine to look into it, they would get results saying it’s a legitimate file. This trick would obviously not work when anti-malware software is installed on the device but users without a security program could be tricked.

Should you remove MFResident.exe?

If you are using iMyFone and the MFResident.exe file is located where it’s supposed to be, you don’t need to do anything. However, if the file can be found anywhere else, scan your computer with an anti-malware program to check for malware infections. If it does detect it, it should be able to delete MFResident.exe from your computer without much issue. You should keep the anti-malware program installed even after you remove MFResident.exe, so it can guard your computer against future malware.
